Gesticulation in Video Description (self.Blind)
submitted by No_Construction_9253
Hello.

I'm a descriptive transcriber and the speaker in the video I'm currently working on gesticulates frequently throughout his speech. How much of this would people actually find it useful for me to describe? I currently have a sentence in my opening set-up description saying "Speaking passionately, Smith gesticulates with their hands throughout their speech to provide emphasis." Would it be appropriate to describe every gesticulation he makes, thereby awkwardly breaking up the captions nearly every sentence? Is the descriptor at the beginning sufficient? Or is there a better middle ground. For the record, none of his gesticulation is particularly big, wild, or in any other way noteworthy enough to get mentioned in the descriptive transcript otherwise.

A good way to approach this question, is to determine how much of the gesticulating contributes to communication. Your goal is to convey the information being presented visually, in an auditory/verbal format. So, if you can close your eyes and still derive the meaning via the dialog, you don’t need to describe much about the gesticulating. If there’s not much being said, but the gesticulation is very evocative, you probably should describe it. I hope this helps.
