Gesticulation in Video Description (self.Blind)
submitted by EvenWheel

Hello.

I have a job as a descriptive transcriber and the speaker in the video I'm currently working on gesticulates frequently throughout his speech. How much of this would people actually find it useful for me to describe? I currently have a sentence in my opening set-up description saying "Speaking passionately, Smith gesticulates with their hands throughout their speech to provide emphasis." Would it be appropriate to describe every gesticulation he makes, thereby awkwardly breaking up the captions nearly every sentence? Is the descriptor at the beginning sufficient? Or is there a better middle ground. For the record, none of his gesticulation is particularly big, wild, or in any other way noteworthy enough to get mentioned in the descriptive transcript otherwise.

Honestly, just mention it in the beginning and then let the character talk. His hand gestures probably aren't important for the narrative so knowing what he's exactly doing doesn't add much. And it can also be a bit overwhelming to hear your audio and the characters audio bounce back and forth so quickly. Especially if the audio isn't mapped exactly, some of the characters dialogue can be masked by your sound.

Anyway, thank you so much for what you do! We really, really appreciate and need audio description as much as possible. It makes a world of difference.

absolutely this. Thank you for what you do. I'd love to read description; but unfortunately I can't see enough to create any! :(

Out of curiosity, how did you come into your current job? Were you a writer beforehand, or did you specifically seek out the position?

I'd done straight captioning and transcription work before, so I came into this position through that and other work I've done in the field of accessibility
