Advice for me to help my father cope with blindness (self.Blind)
submitted by joeynails
Unfortunately my dad has had a significant medical illness that caused a severe acute change in his vision. Legally he is blind and can only make out shapes. He is 77 years old and will be dependent on his family for the remainder of his life.

Understandably he is devastated

I would like to support him and help him during this challenging phase in his life.

Any advice is appreciated

Look to see if your state has a commission for the blind or some type of service that may be able to provide him with items and help him learn how to navigate

You should check for a local Commission for the blind, you might also get in contact with the National Federation of the Blind they might be able to help you locate services for him

It normal to feel this way with vision loss. you need to find someone like a grief counselor that can help him through the five grief steps. this is important because if he get stuck in any of the first few steps, this is where most people have thoughts of self harm.
Help him learn to be independent. use online resources like Hadley institute for blind or Youtube Chanel’s to learn how to be independent.
Best wishes for him, I know how hard it is to work through this process.

Your welcome, please keep in mind you also are going to go through your own grief of lossing your fathers independence. understand that this is normal and reach out for help. there is a lot of blind private groups on facebook. Just let them know that it is you father and you will be welcomed with open arms.
