How to drive if half-blind? (self.Blind)
submitted by Thorny_white_rose
Asking for my sister, she finally started driving at 20 years old but is nervous because of her visual impairment. She is blind in her left eye and has trouble with depth perception. She wants advice on driving and/or someone else’s experience with it who also has a visual impairment. Any advice is welcomed and appreciated! Thank you!

I'm blind in one eye and about 20/60 corrected. I also have some pariphrial issues.

Here's the kicker, I've been driving for over 40 years. It's been a journey for sure. Fact is every time I get behind the wheel, I'm as nervous as I was when I was 20.... never goes away.

Biggest thing for me is knowing your limits. Drive in places you know and branch out from there.

It's hard to sum it all up because it's such a personal experience that few would understand.

Good luck and take it slow!

If able buy a newer car with all the lane correction and adaptive cruise control and collision avoidance tech. It will help so much knowing there’s a sound and visual Ixon to what’s wrong. Ie crossing a lane with no turns signal on...etc. adaptive cruise control is cool as hell and efficient.

You didn't mention where you/she lives. In the US different states have different rules about vision based on peripheral and acuity. Here in PA, I have decent acuity but less than 30 degrees peripheral, therefore I stopped driving a few years ago. Kept my driving license as a form of ID until it expired.

I suspect you may need to divulge that to your car insurance provider.

She’s able to legally drive and insurance knows, but she just wants advice and what other people have done to make up for it.

Look into Bioptic driving laws and instructors in your state. Maybe check with your state vocational agency for the Blind
