I want a job (self.Blind)
submitted by Iulian53
Hi, my name is Iulian, I'm from Romania and I am 17 years old and I am legally blind, a fact for which it's hard for me to get a job somewhere which does not involve sight. And I really want something to do that I can earn an income from. Especially since I'm a student and I need to be able to pay for my meditator plus many things I need as a student. I've been thinking about many things I could do, but you still have to see and at the moment nothing is right for me.

And I want to get to a university in economics because I need money for all kinds of specific training.

If you can help me in any way or advise on what I could do, I would be grateful and determined to work for my goals.

What I thought I could do in principle is work online using my laptop.

I can do just about anything that can be used with the voice assistant.

(ps: sorry for my English, I'm not fluent)

Listing some of your skill will help but I’m legally blind and I have work at Fedex before.

How? I'll take any work I can get atm. Lol. I thought they were mainly drivers? I've got no sight what soever.

There are other jobs like loadings trucks I believe

Oh true didn't think of that

Well I don’t think they will hire you if your complexly blind as “safety reason” my complexity blind friend tried and they gave him that. I applied but I have enough vision to where I can see what around me, sorry for late response

Are you in school? If you do, talk with them. Your teachers and school councilors may be able to guide you on finding a job in the community.
In the mean time, consider the following:
Set up your own business and wash cars
Go to a family owned store or restaurant and offer to work

I personally know two blind attorneys and im in law school with two blind law students. Where there is a will, technology helps to pave the way.

Best of luck to you!!

What skills do you currently have? Can you use a screen reader fluently? How much time do you have before you need to earn?

Realistically if you only want to do something online and you aren't willing to learn some new skills, then you may have a hard time finding something decent. Trying to learn how to do accessibility testing is one possible direction, but will involve gaining new skills.

I'd recommend reaching out to some organizations that may be able to guide you better, for example $1.

Software development pays pretty well and besides (maybe) frontend, there should be nothing really holding you back.

It can be a variant for the future but it requires a lot of learning time and especially I have to find someone to teach me because there are only visual learning materials online. And I need an income right now, not in a year or two.

There are many guides written online that you could use to teach yourself.
Of course you'd have to invest the time, but it will pay off.

Maybe you should add some skills of yours in the post, so people are able to get an idea what you actually could do right now without learning anything.

Thanks for the advice, I added in the post what can I do, but I need an income now I'm not looking for something for the future

You might want to use a screen reader to read the guides to you.
