What is life like?

I'm totally blind now, but was born with 10% of sight.

Life was pretty normal and kind of a walk in the park for me. I never really cared about school but started teaching myself software engineering as a teen in the mid-90s, found a job in early 2000 before my 18th birthday, and never looked back at education. At 24 I became fully independent, and my life continued to be a success until in 2011 my stable vision began to deteriorate by losing contrast perception, which affected my ability to work so I ended up quitting my job at the end of that year, followed by moving back home two years later when I ran out of money, as I spent a lot both in healthcare due to my vision issues and prostitutes due to a sex addiction. By early 2014 I had lost all useful vision.

The first 5 years of blindness were hell to me, I didn't feel safe going anywhere on top of having an extremely protective family, and was yet to find a way to do the only thing I could still do safely: code. All I thought about, and talked about, was committing suicide, though as can be noticed I didn't actually go through with it because even that was made much harder to accomplish without sight, meaning there was a huge chance of ending up with even more disabilities. Then in 2019 I decided to teach my niece, who was split between software engineering and veterinary medicine, how to build an iOS game, and since she didn't demonstrate any interest for it I ended up working on the project completely alone, reaching a playable state a month later. Until this point I thought that I wasn't skilled enough to code blind, but ended up proving myself wrong with that project, and so ever since then I've been spending all my days learning and coding to pass the time.

Nowadays and since I returned to coding 2 years ago, my life has been upgraded to being just a limbo where nothing of interest ever happens. I'm financially independent, if one can call it that, as I live off my disability benefits, and don't work anymore since I don't think I'm competent enough to pull the cart wherever I end up working like I used to do, so between being a burden to a company or being a burden to my country I choose the latter.

Can I ask you the reason behind your interest in this question?
cat9090Z [OP] 2 points 2y ago
I've been doing research about blind and deafblind people and read short stories online, like on Quora.

When you will be done with your research, please share the conclusions here with us :)

Yeah, why not.

I have been totally blind from birth. Life is good most of the time.
cat9090Z [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Sorry to hear. Can you distinguish between light and dark?
chrystalalex 1 points 2y ago
It's not like I'm terminally ill or anything, so there's no need for that. In answer to your question though, no. I am totally blind.

Life is quite normal for me.
Its difficult to tell the difference between my life and life of a normally normal person as I cannot imagine how life goes for you.
Maybe someone who has lived both the lives can explain it.
I too want to know this :)

Sorry to hear. It's amazing though how you responded to my comment so quickly, how do you do it?

I'm about as blind as it's possible to be and I fell asleep last night thinking wow, it's only been a four day week, it's not even friday and I'm already wrecked. So mainly it's like working really hard at the moment which doesn't have all that much to do with being blind.
