Searching objects (self.Blind)
submitted by LeBlindGuy
I'm visually impaired and I can't find objects on the ground (some mjnutes ago I lost my guitar pick ).
Can you give me some advice or techniques to find things on the ground?

sometimes my hands are my eyes, and that means running them over the ground until you're touching the thing you couldnt see

There are apps as well, such as Be My Eyes where you can contact a volunteer who will help you look, using your phone camera. I’ve been a volunteer and help people pick out matching outfits, read expiration dates, cooking directions and more.

Hope this can help as well.

I was about to say the same thing.

I once spilled an entire box of clear thumbtacks on shag carpet, while barefoot and home alone. It was..... the *special* fun.

First of all, as soon as I drop something, I try and pay close attention to the sound it makes when it lands and use that to triangulate, as best as possible, where it might be.

Then I stop and think about what I dropped and what kind of surface I dropped it on and figure out, ok what's the likelihood that it bounced/rolled away, etc.

From this, determine the most viable search zone and start searchin'!

If I have easy access to a flashlight, I'll use that to give me more light. Otherwise, I'll probably feel around on the floor, starting in the most likely spot and slowly branching out as-needed.

If the thing I dropped has metal on it, I'll grab a magnet to go over the floor with.

If all else fails, I'll get a broom and sweep up the area.

I laughed a little at your story because I’ve done the same thing with clear tacks and also with shattered clear glass so many times.

I use a flashlight. Worse case you set the flashlight on the ground and look for the shadow of what you dropped.

If I’m barefoot I sweep my foot gently around carpeted areas (unless I’m looking for something potentially sharp) until I find what I’m looking for, I often swallow my dignity and do the army crawl around the floor with a flashlight as well. If it’s got metal on it I find decent magnet rods can be very helpful especially with things like tacks or needles.

I’m not sure how much vision you have, but you could get glitter tape or something sparkly to put on things you are concerned about losing. Then you should be able to see it better. Wave a flashlight around and it would be more noticeable. It comes in all different colors so it won’t stick out as much to others if you are concerned about that.

I get on the floor and feel around

I run my hand on the ground until i feel it. Dropped a bunch of paper clips yesterday, took me like 5 minutes to pick them all up. Was a lot less frustrating when I closed my eyes and just felt for them.
