Best screen size for low-vision students (self.Blind)
submitted by El-damo
A bit of background about my situation, I was diagnosed in an early age with Retinitis pigmentosa and my vision has slowly been degenerating. I will start university this September and I’m in the market for a laptop. I’m wondering what screen size for me? Honestly I’m leaning towards a MacBook but it’s everything above 13 inch is above my price range. What do you guys suggest?

Buy the 13 in and connect it to a large flat screen tv(as a monitor) via the video cable. That's what I do. Thunderbolt to HDMI cable. I then use an external keyboard and touchpad.

This. For best results, get a 4k TV that supports chroma 4:4:4. I also agree with getting a 13" MacBook. This will make it much easier to carry around from class to class. If your experience is anything like mine, you will mostly be taking notes on the laptop at school, with maybe some light browsing and messaging. When you need to perform heavy work, such as creating and editing spreadsheets, coding, writing papers, or other work that has you switching apps a lot, you can connect to the TV and external keyboard. Another advantage to getting a MacBook, is that if your vision becomes so much worse that you have to start using a screen reader, you already have one built in, so you could simply turn it on and start using it. It's easy to learn, too.

If you are using a screen magnifier, bigger screens are usually your best options. But that also increases the cost. Some people use external screens, but that isn't a realistic option if you are going to different classrooms.

Depending on where you are, some places will fund for your equipment. Have you checked with your school or your local blind organization?

EDIT: I just checked, it looks like you are going to Queen's University. Talk to them to see what equipment they would fund for.

You can also get computer equipment through ADP if you are eligible, but they do have specific requirements.

I did reach out to ADP but they have a cost cap of $1200, which I’m grateful for, but it obviously won’t be enough to buy I bigger screen MacBook. Worst case scenario, I’ll look at some
Windows laptop.( ordered one but I’m returning it )

Send an email to the school and see if they can provide any financial assistance for tech as well.

I’ll definitely do that next week or so but I probably won’t get help until the start of the school year in September. Oh and thank you!

I have Pericentral RP, only have about 15ish degrees of central vision in both eyes and I have found smaller screens help me more. It lets me see the whole screen easier. Ive just made the text larger. Nothing frustrates me more than searching for 10 minutes to find my cursor on a large screen 😅

Yes, also have RP and screens that are too large drive me crazy. I was gifted a monstrous ultrawide monitor once but I still just use my 13" laptop screen because I lose track of the cursor and windows on the big screen.

I use a 13 inch MacBook. The gestures for zooming and panning on the trackpad are so nice, I don't even worry about the screen size.

I also dock it to a 32 inch monitor with external keyboard, mouse and trackpad and that's a great experience too.

The advantage of the laptop screen itself is that it's all inside my field of view, whereas the large monitor sometimes isn't.

I got a Dell touch screen that's 18inches. I love it. I have RP too. I would highly suggest it. But as stated before bigger screens will cost more. And bigger screens are very recommended for someone who has RP due to our tunnel vision.

I use an hdmi cable to attach my laptop to a tv monitor when I’m at home. Doesn’t really help with on the go stuff but might be useful for homework.
