Paid Columbia Research Study: Wearable Camera System for Blind Navigation (self.Blind)
submitted by ColumbiaCEAL
Hi everyone! I am a researcher at Columbia University. I am working with Columbia's Computer-Enabled Abilities Lab (CEAL).

We are investigating a wearable camera system to help people with visual impairments navigate independently in unfamiliar indoor spaces, and we are looking for users to try them out and give us feedback about them.

This study will take place from June 14 to June 20 at Columbia University in New York. This is a paid study: it will last no longer than 90 minutes and participants will be given a $25 gift card for their time.

Study participants will use the wearable camera system, consisting of a laptop and a depth camera. We will be providing all the equipment for the study. We will also cover their travel expenses to and from the Columbia University campus, where the study will take place. This study has been approved by the Columbia University Institutional Review Board (IRB Protocol Number: IRB-AAAT5998).

Feel free to ask any questions and we will be happy to respond. You may also contact me directly for more information using Reddit or by contacting $1.

**Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)**

*Will I be paid to participate in the study?*
We will give you a $25 gift card to pay you for your time.

*Will my travel expenses be reimbursed?*
Yes, we will cover your travel expenses to and from the Columbia University campus.

*Are there any risks?*
Loss of confidentiality is a potential risk of the study if you agree to be photographed and video-recorded. Otherwise, we do not anticipate any risks with participating in this study and using our wearable vision system for mapping and navigating indoor spaces. You should continue to use a guide dog, white cane, and/or sighted companion for orientation and mobility while testing our system.

*Are there benefits to taking part in the study?*
You will not directly benefit from taking part in this study, but your participation may help people who are blind or visually impaired in the future. Your participation may lead to advancements in wearable camera systems that may make it possible for people who are visually impaired to navigate more independently.

*What information will be collected?*
We'll ask you to complete a survey after you test the wearable camera system. We will also collect some of your system usage data as you test the wearable camera system. We will not collect any other information.

*How will my information be protected?*
Your survey data will be fully anonymized and encrypted. We will not ask any identifying information in the survey.

Just out of curiosity, to what extent will you be covering the cost of travel to Columbia University to participate in this study?

For instance, I live in Arizona, I can't imagine that the travel would be covered from the other side of the country to fly to New York to participate in this compensated study (for a $25 gift card), right?

Hi u/UpsideDownwardSpiral,
For this study, we are recruiting participants from New York, and the Tri-state area. We will be covering the travel expenses for these regions only.

However, we will be reaching out to people from outside this radius for online interviews. Please feel free to sign-up even if you're not from New York, or the the Tri-state area.

Thanks so much for the question!

I'm always a little concerned when studies are announced declaring no direct benefit to the research participant. This seems to skirt awfully close to violating the beneficence pillar of human subject research ethics. Can you please elaborate on the potential study harms such as physical, psychological, et cetera and then elaborate on why the IRB felt the study worth doing with such a weak benefience component? (Please don't be ethically lazy and automatically wave away harms via some low probability risk analysis; indicate the thinking).
