Challenges of Music Learning: Call for participation! (self.Blind)
submitted by exilente
EDIT:

Hello!

I am sighted PhD student trying to better understand the challenges of learning music as a blind or low vision person. We are interested in speaking with music teachers, early music learners and musicians with the lived experience of visual impairment. Anyone with any form of visual impairment (from low vision to complete blindness) qualifies for the study.

If you're keen to participate or would like to know more, please feel free to message me here or follow the link for more information: $1

This is a paid research participation where every participant will receive a $CAD 25 Amazon gift card or on any other platform of their choice.

You're asking for BVI people, but I clicked the link and it asks for Blind or Low Vision people. There's actually a distinction between Vision Impaired and Low Vision in lots of places (which seems weird to most people, myself included).

It might help you to clarify exactly what kinds and levels of Low Vision you're looking for in participants, especially because experiences vary wildly.

Are you looking for people with specific eye diseases?
Are you looking for total blindness or blind people with remaining vision when you ask for blind people?
Are you looking for a particular visual acuity or visual field, for example?
Are you looking for people who use braille for music?

There are a lot of different facets to being VI/LV/B, and it can be quite confusing, but posting any parameters you have or would prefer will get you more accurate results in the long run. Bearing in mind that my example questions are just the tip of the iceberg.

I don't believe I fit the bill, but good luck with this!

Thanks for pointing that out. I'll edit the post and also clarify here. The study aims to understand the challenges for music learning for people anywhere on the spectrum of vision impairment from low vision all the way to complete blindness. We are not looking for people with a specific eye disease nor with a specific visual acuity. We are also not looking specifically for people who can read braille music. The goal is to gain a better overall understanding on the learning strategies involved in learning music and how we might be able to assist with that through technology in the future. :)

Please feel free to post any follow up queries too.
