Hiking tips and advice (self.Blind)
submitted by Crafty_Dragon_roll
Does anybody go hiking? I've been a few times and have been having a few issues. I currently have a pencil tip and it's gotten snagged up a few times with roots, trails aren't wide enough. Steps are more difficult sometimes.

My husband does help, but we're both newbies. What tips do y'all think are better? And how do you navigate with small trails without your cane getting stuck? Any advice would be much appreciated! Thank you!

Depending on how rough the terrain is, there is a wheel tip that some people use.

Because the wheel only goes forward, you also have to adjust how you scan by twisting your wrist.

This cane tip isn't used very often, though.... in 10 years, I've only ever seen one client using it.

Thank you. I will admit I'm not sure about a wheel though. We are starting with easy trails right now.

Thank you. I'll look into that one too. I don't remember my O&M instructor going over the different tips with me.

I use an extendable trekking pole, extending it to the same length I would have my cane. I hold it vertically with my hand in a fist, with the top between my closed index and thumb. I tap opposite of what ever step I’m taking to feel terrain/elevation. You can do the same with a cane but you can put weight on a pole if you need to. Hope this helps. 🍻

Cool, I'll look those up. Thank you. I do need to put weight down on it, I've noticed. Sometimes I'll get my cane a little stuck in the dirt because of it.

They get expensive but you can find them for $20 or so. For sure. Lol

Frugality for the win. Lol

Y’all brave for hiking!! I’ll only do dirt terrain/trail that is practically flat lol. I’ve done one to many hikes up mountains resulting in me tumbling down. Never again lol.

Lol. I will admit having a sighted husband helps. I would not be attempting this without him. He catches me when I trip. Haha
