You should definitely get more training because your vision situation and mobility tools have changed. It would be like telling a person wanting to become a pilot that they don't need flying lessons because they know how to drive a car.

I was in a similar boat not to long ago. I have struggled with vision issues since I was a we' lad and only recently in the past 3 years has my vision degraded to the point where I need to use a cane when outside of my house. One thing that helped me get used to the cane and to stop looking down was to travel places i was familiar with. For me, it was my dog walking route. Id practice it with my cane and a few things happened.
1. I did not feel as timid or anxious about walking with a cane. 2. I stopped looking down and relyed more on the cane for feedback about what was coming up next
Id reccommend getting some more mobility training and also just go out and practice if you can. The more you use the cane the more you will trust it and yourself. Find your speed and be safe.

I don’t know if this helps/make sense, but I was taught to “sweep my cane like a rainbow”

It's good to get training again every now and then, because instructors can help correct bad habits, but also each instructor is different.
The cane's job is to check your next few steps. If you can, focus your vision on the path further ahead, to see if there is anything approaching.
Optimally, you want to scan roughly an inch past each shoulder. Some people don't scan far enough, and that can mean their shoulders sometimes clip things. Some people scan too far, which can also be a tripping hazard to others.
