Does anyone drive and use a white cane? (self.Blind)
submitted by Agreeable_Morning_60
Im nervous to get in trouble if I use white cane and I still drive. I am legally allowed to drive even though I cant see great. But, I think a white cane is going to help me. Really wanting to do it after all the support you all have given me!

*Edit: Thank you everyone! You are all amazing! Very grateful for all the comments on my two posts. Im going to take my ID cane tonight to Walmart. Realized the cane I bought is meant for visually impaired people like me who can drive but need something for crowded places and lower light places. Mostly going to use it to keep from bumping into things and hopefully part the sea off people at Walmart!

Yes, I do. I have a degenerative cornea disease so my vision is fairly correctable during the day....but once the sun starts to set, I get very blind, very quickly, and I will use a white cain if I need to walk in low light (and I absolutely can't drive in low light conditions).

I also use a white cane when I am walking through crowds (people blend in to one another) or when traveling, since I can't see/read small print like seat numbers and I need to be near a window on an airplane so I can keep it closed (light will fry my eyes).

I am self-conscious about using a white cane. Like you, I have usable sight....but not all the time. I am embarrassed when people think I am 100% blind, and it took me a long time not to feel like "a fake". But the bottom line is...I need it. So I use it :)

I can no longer drive but I imagine you may get some crazy looks and rude comments at the very least. Most people will not understand.

Yeah, my worry is someone will call cops on me or something haha
xmachinaxxx 5 points 2y ago
As long as you’re a licensed driver the cops aren’t going to do anything.

Yeah ik just an awkward situation. Also it just occurred to me i bought an identification cane which is made for visually impaired to let people know and to stop me from bumping into things!

Solidarity! I have a cane that I'm always hesitant to use after I drive myself somewhere. I can only drive in limited circumstances and the quality of my vision changes with the lighting and if my eye is "flaring." Navigating in bright light is very hard, in complete darkness is impossible, crowds are tough, and I've been known to walk into glass doors... Thanks for posting this - I definitely feel more inspired to use my cane!

Yeah! Im very similar, i can see basically nothing in low light, and in bright light i can see enough to drive short distances and places ive been. I am no longer comfortable driving in cities or anywhere new thats not rural. Im actually going to use my cane tonight at walmart! First time out and im ready thanks to everyone here!

Who will you get into trouble with? People who don't know what they are talking about, that's who.

I mean my elderly dad uses a walking stick some days and not other days. He still garden's, climbs step ladders, reads at church but he now sleeps downstairs and adapted his bathroom. Doesn't mean he's faking anything.

The people who will comment, question you on it or complain don't know what they are talking about.

And I know it's easier said than done to ignore them.

I really wish there were better campaigns by governments on the spectrum that is vision impairment.

I hear ya. My biggest concern is ill get an entitled person calling cops on me or something.

This post makes me feel so validated. I have started using a white cane recently because I have depth perception issues that get worse in the dark. However, I can still drive and legally have my license. I have so much imposter syndrome when using my cane, because I can drive and do other sighted things. I’m so happy to see that there are other people who can relate to me.

I know exactly how you feel!

This is a post that I was actually looking for. I have glaucoma and I do have blind spots, my depth perception is off, color blindness, contrast and night blindness, BUT... I still have 20/20 vision with my glasses. I don't understand this considering when I'm reading the letters, and when I think I'm done, they usually will say, "you have two more letters" and I physically have to turn my head to see them as they are in a blind spot.

I still drive. Driving in the day I'm fine as long as I'm familiar with the area and there is plenty of light and there is not too much traffic. I have noticed recently that it's getting tougher for me to know if a car is in my next lane or two lanes over and this scares me.

Having said that. I'm a professor and I was talking to one of my student who is legally blind and I was telling him that my knees and ankles have injuries because of my issues. I'm constantly missing steps, kicking curbs, twisting ankles because I can't see transitions, curbs, steps, or misjudge and step where there is no step and jam up my knee. He recommended a telescoping cane. I did order it, but like the original poster indicated, I feel a little in authentic driving to work and then having to pull out a cane to hit the campus. I know a few of my colleagues know that my vision is bad. Even with glasses it's hard for me to recognize faces and forget about graphs and charts during meetings. But still I feel like using the cane and then driving folks wouldn't understand.

I have questions about your eyesight.

I'm 20/400 and I use a cane mainly for depth-finding and identification. Is it something like that?

My visual acuity is 20/30 with glasses but my visual field is weird. I can see fine for 20 degrees in all directions from my center fixation then I have a 60 degree ring where i see little to nothing. Then my vision returns for another 30 degrees.

Do you already have your license? There are field requirements that vary from (in the US) state to state.
Agreeable_Morning_60 [OP] 1 points 2y ago
I do yeah. Maine is pretty lax. I took the esterman and passes because it only tests binocular horizontal visual field. My left eye is quite a bit worse than my right so I was able to see a little bit of the light in my blind spots horizontally.

Nice. Just curious and not that you need it with 20/30 best corrected but do you use bioptics?
