I did it thanks to all of you! (self.Blind)

I went to Walmart today with my ID cane. Definitely got some stares, but I have never been so relaxed walking around. My eyes finally got a rest! Thank you r/Blind community!

Yay! I felt that way too when I first started using my cane, I realized just how badly I had been craning my neck to watch my feet so I wouldn’t trip for the first time I was able to walk with good posture and actually look around at my environment.

Exactly, it was weird standing up straight 😂

Yeah it is I didn’t realize how much strain it put on my spine!

That's amazing! It feels almost "liberating", doesn't it? I'm so happy for you! Did you part the seas of people?

Also, I had this funny experience yesterday that reminded me of you! I went to the liquor store yesterday, and not gonna lie, I was definitely drunk. I had my cane with me, and omg, I was in and out in two seconds because the staff literally grabbed the bottles for me, rang me through in seconds, and were sooooo sweet. My friend calls my vision and cane a "crappy superpower" now, hah!

Haha thats awesome dude! I didnt have too many people to part, had a few that were oblivious. But i didnt get yelled at or scolded for having it so i take it as a win! The real test is going to be today. There is a riverside concert that will have hundreds of people outside in low light. So im going to cane it up. Hoping I can pull a Moses haha

Damn, hopefully you part the seas! Have fun tonight!!!

Fingers crossed! 😂

I used to feel awkward too. I can’t go out in public without my cane anymore. I feel naked without it. Congrats!

Haha Im sure Ill hit that point someday, right now I can function at work no prob, bar a few bumps into walls and benches. But im going to make it a point to use the cane when I am out doing things.

Excuse me for asking this... What is an ID cane? Although I am sighted, I have an elderly friend who is almost completely blind and can't venture outside on his own, like he did 2 years ago.
Agreeable_Morning_60 [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Yeah no worries, I only learned about it yesterday. An ID can is a red and white cane similar to the cane used for mobility for the blind. However the Id cane is much shorter and doesnt provide much in the way of mobility assistance. Its more to identify to everyone that I am visually impaired, plus I use it to hold in front of me to avoid tripping over things or bumping into kids I cant see haha

This for letting me know 👍

Don't worry about the looks I'm 6' 7 and I could stare at all the time when I'm with my cane.

Wow voice text sucks right now. I get stares all the time
Agreeable_Morning_60 [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Haha I understood what you meant. It will take some time but I will get there!
TechnicalPragmatist 2 points 2y ago
They could stare all day long and I wouldn’t care and neither should you.

That's amazing!
