Does anybody else like to build LEGO sets? (self.Blind)
submitted by dankswed
This could be because I have some vision left? I'm not sure. But I have WAY too many LEGO sets that have cost me WAY too much. I really like that it's so touch-based though. It's a fun and different textile puzzle that I really enjoy. Granted, I just got $1, and that one is DEFINITELY not a textile one... But it's my first one like this, so I guess we'll see how it goes!

I can’t do it independently, but it’s something my partner and I do when we’re together. He reads me the instructions and helps me find the right piece and I construct the set. It takes a while because I get bored/exhausted easy, but it’s a nice activity

I did when I was a kid, but being that I'm completely blind I needed help actually building them lol I'd have someone else build them then being a kid play with the people in whatever set it was heh, fuck looking at it.
If theres any way to do it independently now I would gladly buy as many star wars sets as I can and attempt to build them 😈😈

I recently got $1 and $1.

I have enough vision to build them with the instructions PDFs, but the really cool thing is the characters are all textured minifigures. The Ewok is amazing!

Oh wow yeah that does sound pretty epic.
I take it the pdf instructions are still the same as the old print ones back in the day? As in, they can't be properly interpreted with a screen reader?
I hope I'm wrong... Lol

Oh yeah, they're just pictures. They're pretty high quality and can be magnified as much as you want, but that's it.

For what it's worth, you could maybe find the minifigures on BrickLink. Prepare your wallet though.

Lol I may look now. You've convinced me

Lego have official instructions for the blind here:

https://legoaudioinstructions.com

This is the website and guy that kicked it all off (has other models on here)
http://legofortheblind.com

I have used the official LEGO instructions and have built a model independently. I am unable to see standard instructions so only used these accessible ones.

Oh wow, thanks. I will definitely check those out.

Maybe. As a kid but yeah, not so much anymore.

I buy a lot of the space themed Idea sets because they've always been fun to build. Just bought the new discovery set myself. I do struggle with the manuals sometimes and differentiating pieces from eachother, but that's when I call in for help. My favourite one to build so far was probably the Lunar Lander, the most Frustrating one was probably Saturn V since a lot of the panels were really fiddly to get in place. But yeah, I find Lego really accessible to build and a great way to pass some time.

The Saturn V was a total pain in the ass!!! And same, the colours on the manual are sometimes not that obvious... And if I drop one, oh god.
ConstantIncident 1 points 2y ago
I build my sets on the floor so that if I drop a piece, at least I know that it's on the floor. Doesn't stop them from blending in though. I've resorted to using a light to shine on them now since my floor is carpet, so it makes it easier to find shiny plastic on the carpet.

I had all the available Minecraft ones at one point, built them all. I’m partially sighted (20/400), I needed a lot of help to decipher the guides of the more complex builds.
dankswed [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Fair enough! But it's still fairly fun, right? I think it's the tactile thing for me, I swear.
GoBlindOrGoHome 1 points 2y ago
Oh it’s definitely fun and very satisfying but I rely too heavily on my remaining sight so I’m starting to feel like I can’t do the kits anymore.

How does that map Leggo work??!!! As putting it together! Interesting!
dankswed [OP] 2 points 2y ago
It's all flat pieces that come together with the tube pieces... And then the rest is teeny little dots! I'm honestly kinda scared to build it, hahaha!
[deleted] 3 points 2y ago
Oh!! Where did you get it!!! Why are you making me want to get myself in this mess as well lmao!
dankswed [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Because LEGO is the bomb! I got it online, from the LEGO store. :)
