Good gifts for a blind or visually impaired person?(self.Blind)
submitted by BaronDeKalb
My sister has Retinitis Pigmentosa and has been slowly losing her vision for the last 10 years. In the past few years it has gotten noticeably worse. She can still use a phone by avoiding her blindspots but she regularly will walk into objects within her path if she is not using her cane. Eventually she will be completely blind unless some magical CRISPR treatment comes to fruition.
Her 34th birthday is coming up and I'm curious if there are any gifts that I can get her that would help her as she continues to lose her vision. For the visually impaired out there, are there any gadgets or tools out there that you wish you had access to that would help you in your day to day life?
Thanks for your input!

If she doesn’t already have one maybe like an Amazon echo or a Google HomePod I know I use those in my day today life a lot it mainly just depends what kind of stuff she’s into or if she’s really into music maybe get her a Bluetooth speaker if she doesn’t already have one personally I recommend a JBL flip five eights $100 pretty much everywhere or if you wanna drop a lot of money a JBL extreme 3

It’s a bit expensive but there is a finger strap keyboard called “Tap Strap”. I dont have it but Id imagine when I may go blind later on that this would be an epic tool. Basically it lets you type the whole keyboard, use as a mouse and use gesture controls with one hand and anywhere. No actual keyboard needed. I think thats a pretty accessible tool imo.

it's a learning curve. I have one and tbh I use it more for gaming than typing. I learned braille from the age of 5 and qwerty touchtyping from 8, and am still much faster than either of those than with the tap. Perhaps if I'd devoted a whole hour per day I'd have gotten faster.
It's also epic for triggering semi, invisible sound effects during bedtime stories, although that requires much planning.

Bump dots for a microwave oven. Bright flashlights. Talking microwave oven.

The Amazon microwave lets you control it with Alexa. I know someone who still hasn't even stuck dots on hers and just tells her speaker to microwave things.

Wonder if they have an air conditioner like that

Yes the Amazon Microwave is a nice thing! But I was looking something budget-friendly for the OP

Things that feel good! A good cuddle blanket or a soft sweater

I'm a 34 year old with RP and I love blankets, but I'm not sure if those things are related.
I do like collecting nice, bright flashlights tho, and that is definitely related

Uber eats or DoorDash gift card!! Always comes in handy when I’m craving food in the evening and it’s to dark to walk.

So for last Christmas my friends got me a cheap and easy to use gift. It's these markers that work via remote control and you attach them to your phone, wallet, keys, etc and then you click the remote and they beep at you until they are found.
So it does not sound like your sister uses Braille, but I bet she would like some pretty jewellery from Elegant Insights Braille Creations (or similar creator)
A gift card is always useful, provided you identify clearly, label it on an envelope what it's for. I frequently use them for restaurant, ITunes, movie theatre, etc.

What about something pragmatic like a brailler or a book to learn braille or a braille display. Or a copy of jaws? And encourage her to use it?
