Blind youth: what should I know about you?(self.Blind)
submitted by morganselah
I have an interview coming up for working with blind youth and finding their vocation. Although I've worked with all kinds of youth, I've never worked with blind youth. What is unique about being blind and young? What would you like everyone to know about your life? Thanks for taking the time to answer!

Each blind person is different, so your question and mindset are flawed.

Hmmm...I assumed that was understood. I should have phrased my question differently. How about: What would you like seeing adults who work with blind youth to know? Maybe that question is closer to the mark.

Again, it's very hard to provide an answer since every young person is different. The way a person with low vision experiences the world is quite different to how a totally blind person experiences it. A person who was encouraged by their family to develop age-appropriate social and living skills will be quite different to someone whose family stunted their development.

OK. Well, if nothing else, I've learned that there's a whole spectrum that I haven't really thought about before. So that's helpful.

Treat them like any other young adult. There is nothing worse than being babied because someone thinks you need it, when all you want to do is feel normal.

My son is a blind youth. He can tell immediately if he is being treated like a teenager who happens to be blind, or a blind person. Regarding vocations, youth need to be learn how to advocate for themselves. For some young adults this comes naturally, some people struggle with it. This is true for sighted teens as well.
Lighthouse for the Blind in San Francisco has an amazing youth program.
