Any advice on web accessibility (self.Blind)
submitted by Elegant-Run-6717
Hello everybody,

I am doing an internship at a company called Purple-Lens, and we run an assistive technology in the internet community. I am trying to learn more about this new world I am diving into and I want to help and give a voice to the people that need it the most. I was hoping that in this post I can get some insight or ideas. This is not a post to promote the company or what we offer, but to look for ways that we can improve in a meaningful way to offer the best possible solution we can.

Thank you, and any comment will be appreciated.

I'd be happy to help you, but I'm honestly not quite sure what you're asking for exactly.

First, what does "we run an assistive technology in the internet community." mean exactly? Are you developing assistive tech, or do you mean that you have a community going for assistive tech users?

You're asking about web accessibility, but do you want to know anything in particular when it comes to the technical details? Obstacles that come up in this field? :) Some clarification would be awesome.

Thanks for getting back to me. Purple-Lens has developed an assistive tech, and I want some feedback from the community. Not looking for the technical details, but the experience of the user.
For example, how can we change forms online to make them user-friendly and easy to navigate for people who are blind? I believe there is always room for improvement.
Hope this clarifies what advice I am hoping to receive - thanks!

I had a quick google for Purple Lens and by the looks of things, it is a plugin for WordPress to in some way improve accessibility of Wordpress-created websites. I, however, see various glaring issues on the homepage alone, which doesn't instill me with a huge amount of confidence tbh.

We have generic alt texts like " brand-logo" repeated almost a dozen times, inconsistent heading levels, these are the basics of basics that aren't being done properly.

As for how to make forms accessible, essentially by following the HTML spec and a bit of common sense. Label your form fields, associate them programmatically, use the required attribute as well as a \* to indicate required fields, make sure there's proper error handling, that kind of thing.

Thanks for taking the time to review the website, I really appreciate it! I’ll try to get these issues fixed asap. I will continue looking for details like this.

What do you mean by assistive tech?

If you look up how to make forms accessible, you’ll find a lot of pages.
