You're right, but this individual doesn't seem interested in having an even slightly broader view of the world.

I’m completely blind and agree with guy 1.
Blindness is just a word. As for the first comment, as I don’t know what sub it’s from I can’t really comment apart from saying the person probably meant VI person but I don’t know.

I think trying to educate isn't necessarily a bad thing, I'd say this was mostly just a really silly argument on semantics this other person dragged you into.
What I'm not really getting is how the very first comment warranted your response. Like ...did anything indicate this person was trolling? Was it in a jokes subreddit or some such? Trying to figure out where you got the vibe from that he was joking, but I'm probably just missing context there.
Can also probably just share a link to the thread next time if there was one, would save some typing :)
On the whole though, no, I wouldn't say what you did was patronizing. Blind people debunking myths is practically part of our job description; we do it all the time and scenes in movies are just part of that.
The thing about blind meaning unable to see or even the bit about blind not necessarily meaning fully blind really is irrelevant in this entire discussion; apparently blind people busted myths about blind people in movies, but then, like I said, I think I am missing some context :)

From my perspective, jokes are just jokes so long as they arent aiming to hurt peoples feelings. Like “A blind guy walks into a bar… *thunk*”. Is it factually accurate, no. Im VI and yeah I bump into things frequently, and I know a few nearly blind and totally blind people and they bump into things. However, we all have adapted ways to avoid that, canes, dogs, etc. is the joke funny, a little, but the main thing is I dont take things personally or i dont try and be offended by them. Like my wife and I joked about starting a youtube channel called Blind Deaf and Blonde (blind deaf and dumb). I have Usher and she is blonde. Its a joke, not meant to insult, just to get a chuckle. So back to the actual post lol I appreciate you trying to inform and defend our community, but picking your battle is probably what you need to work on. If someone takes someones cane and starts laughing as they walk aimlessly, then by all means rip that person a new a**hole.

Arguing over semantics is silly. I tell people that I ‘read’ books, even though I’m technically listening.
It doesn’t matter imo, as long as they aren’t faking. But here’s the thing with faking: it rarely if ever happens. I’ve personally never seen it. But the general public is /obsessed/ with the idea of it, can’t tell you how many times I’ve been accused of faking being legally blind. For blind/low vision people on the internet, arguments over use of the word ‘blind’ is just more of this nonsense.
I can’t speak for everyone but I don’t pay much mind to semantics. At the end of the day it just doesn’t matter to me.

Are you being patronizing? Well let's see...
Trying to defend us from a joke that has been around in one form or another since the advent of moving pictures in the late 1800's? Misguided is the word I would use. It's unfunny, but more in a dad joke that a server in a restaurant hears 30 times a week way than anything offensive.
Having a long, drawn out, pointless debate over semantics happens all the time on the internet, no biggie there.
Using a blindness joke that has been around for longer than anyone you have ever known as a prop to start an exercise in advanced pedantry? A bit annoying maybe but not patronizing. People use anything they can to start arguments so that is easily overlooked.
Coming to a group of blind people in search of some kind of validation for using a blind joke as a prop to start a silly argument over semantics? That is the patronizing part right there.
And no, you missed about 95% of the nuance of the way different blindness terms are used so you were not educating anyone.

It's kind of unfunny, period? Just not a funny joke. The joke is,essentially, blind people can't see? Also water is wet, ho ho, ha ha.
WaterIsWetBot1 points2y ago
Water is actually not wet. It only makes other materials/objects wet. Wetness is the ability of a liquid to adhere to the surface of a solid. So if you say something is wet we mean the liquid is sticking to the surface of the object.
Amonwilde1 points2y ago
This comment is funnier than the original joke, so in that regard it succeeds. And before you go down the water is wet rabbithole any further (though go ahead if you feel like it), it's funny because it's so irrelevant, not because it's inaccurate.
