I have congenital nystagmus and I was a kiln technician.
I can never drive a car but I can drive the piss out of a forklift.

Blind people do all-sorts. Coding. Teaching. Music. writing. Web-design are all big draws.
laconicflow1 points2y ago
I thought web design is wicked visual, how's that work? I'm blind too.
retrolental_morose1 points2y ago
the visual part of web work is almost certainly impossible without sighted help. But styling is separated from performance these days. The code to make a page do what it does can be written without worrying about how it looks on a screen. indeed almost all websites also have a back-end (most usually a system that talks to a database or other source of information) - and so the number of areas you can work on are actually quite varied.

thanks.

I'm currently working in a call center. I hate it. I want to work with animals.
[deleted] [OP]3 points2y ago
What stops you from doing it?
snow6711 points2y ago
There isn't much available in this area that I could reliably get to. But the one place I got an interview with never called back and updated their listing with this requirement:
"Near vision; ability to see details at close range to perform activities such as: transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, reading, visual inspection involving small parts"
For a pet boarding place.

Being hired for my first “real” job since vision loss right now. 50/50 split between front end web development and accessibility testing. Also a giging musician on the side.

Mind if I ask where you found your current role? Asking cause I’m in a similar situation / field.
RunsOnBoltCoffee1 points2y ago
Actually participated in a software development training program run by DLT and my local community college. The program’s last component was an internship and I’m being hired out of that internship.
antdp4252 points2y ago
Oh wow, that’s awesome. Glad it worked out for you.
I assume this is your first Dev role? What tech you working with?
RunsOnBoltCoffee2 points2y ago
Yeah. Mostly HTML5, CSS and JS, but they do a lot with Fractal, Nunjucks, SASS, Markdown, Node. Been learning a lot. Pretty random how I ended up here as the program was Java based. Hope that’s what you meant by tech.

I’m a dishwasher! Not super glamorous like others here but I have a Union which is hella nice.

I'm a software engineer. I know other blind people who work as EMS dispatchers, writers, security analyst (happens to be a co-worker), one who's a teacher.

I wrapping up 18 years in Youth Ministry in August. Return to school in September to earn an MA in Visual Rehabilitation Therapy. I’m super excited to start in VRT. Turns out there are a ton of pathways in VRT. I also explored Counseling, Athletic Training, OT. I know a few people who are blind also who are massage therapists. Also know a gunsmith who is blind.
‘What do you enjoy doing?
[deleted] [OP]1 points2y ago
That’s very interesting, I myself enjoy drawing and just jogging for the most part
DrillInstructorJan1 points2y ago
I'm a musician. Sorry, cliche. I also co direct a musicians agency and I have some crafty stuff I do on the side with my other half.
[deleted] [OP]1 points2y ago
Which instrument or type of music you enjoy?
DrillInstructorJan1 points2y ago
I play guitars, mainly bass but occasionally lead. Type, whatever pays! I used to do a lot of session work, but that's become mainly work from home now. And I used to do loads of theatre but of course that's all shut down, hopefully to restart soon.
What about you?
[deleted] [OP]1 points2y ago
I personally love the sound of electric guitars. Pink Floyd is a band I particularly love as well as Queen. If u haven’t give a listen to stuff like shine on you crazy diamond, it’s such a beautiful song. I plan on taking up the guitar so yeah
