What accommodations would you recommend for visually and hearing impaired cashiers? (self.Blind)
submitted by xela_namesiw
Hello, all!
I'm on the hunt for a new job, but have very limited options due to lack of transportation. My current job is stocking, but it has become too physically tasking.. Most of what I have found in my area are cashiering jobs. I have experience cashiering and feel like it would be physically easier and more accommodating to my physical disability.
The problem is, I have never found accommodations to help myself effectively communicate with customers. I have macular scarring and some degree of hearing loss, so I frequently have interactions with customers where I'm completely lost to what they're saying. I have tried keeping pen and paper at the register to communicate easier, but many customers are resistant to using it or feel offended when offered.
Have any of you found accommodations that would help make communication with the public easier?

Sorry to ask a stupid question - Do hearing aids help at all?

Would a sound enhancer in your ears be helpful?

Maybe? I don't know for sure. I'm from the US and am trying to figure out if my insurance will cover hearing tests/aids.

If your insurance won't cover them, contact your state's vocational rehabilitation agency. Mqny will h3lpbpir have assisting devices to help keep you employed and off disability benefits.
