I went to a water park today! (self.Blind)
submitted by casserole_cat
I (16f) went to a water park today with my family I myself being legally blind. And actually had a good time. Somethings were difficult because at some points it got loud and also sometimes it got very crowded which can be confusing.

My brother didn’t even realize that he was helping me get around lol he was just using me to get on slides because most of them you need two people in a raft to get on.

I do like water slides I just don’t like when you drop in and thens it’s very loud and I don’t know where to get out and I loose my brother in the water and we get separated.

The steps had brightly colored edges painted so that was nice. I couldn’t read any of the signs but that’s to be expected.

The water park wasn’t too big so I memorized the layout pretty fast.

I did get shoved a few times just walking in crowded areas but I think that happens to everyone.

Pretty much ask me about stuff if you are nervous about going to water park and I might know the answer? Idk this was just my experience

Oh also why do sighted people always point at cool things that are far away and completely forget I can’t see it? I just go “uh huh” and they don’t realize?

I'm 6'8 big guy and I get shoved often lol... Its part of the fun. Shove back!

You get shoved? Once I started growing my beard and got some tats, people actually go out of their way to avoid me. It's great.

Per your last question, would you rather they kid-glove you and treat you like the poor blind girl? Of the two, I'll take being forgotten for blind over coddled.

I mean I guess it says something that they forgot and don’t see me as a poor blind girl but also I just find it sorta awkward when they forget to the point of pointing at things far away like as if I can see it. I wouldn’t see it as being coddled if they didn’t point at stuff like that though.

I just don’t know what to do in that situation other than say “uh huh” and look in the direction the pointed at. I don’t want them to forget I’m legally blind because with that comes lots of awkward situations I just want them to be aware like not all they see when they look at me but aware.

Like I’m also hard of hearing and the amount of times I’ve been whispered to and I just nod. So just aware

Seems like you're not self-advocating. You have to practise with the small stuff so you're not intimidated when real obstacles come along.

Yeah, my left eye's blind and my left ear's been so infected I have moderate hearing loss so I can dig that.

I go with a joke. They point east, I turn west. They whisper something in my dead ear, I ask them to repeat what they were saying about their hot cousin INSANELY LOUDLY!

I'm kind of an asshole. My social group are well acquainted with the mad bantz.

I think the answer to that is that they forget you can't see, which I always take as a complament. Waterparks are really fun, I'm glad you had a good time.

What's your approach to memorizing the layout of places I find that even me being sighted I have a lot of difficulty memorizing things like that unless I'm there for a long while
casserole_cat [OP] 3 points 2y ago
Well since I’m legally blind I do something that even sighted people can do which is spot something big and know where you are at based on how close or far away you are from it and just idk I remember where things are. After a few walk around I had the layout memorized. Like there’s the lazy river and I know the green slide is to the right of it and our seats more to the left. Stuff Like that.
