Any blind runners here? Ever run with your cane? (self.Blind)
submitted by Unlikely-Database-27
Would it work? Or would you run the very high risk of being empaled like a marshmallow on a stick. Lol I run with a guide but I wonder if its possible to run alone. I know guide dogs can be trained to run however I wouldn't wanna get a dog just for that, I prefer the cane for walking around and what not.
Any thoughts?

I run with a sighted human guide, either holding their elbow or following immediately behind/slightly to the side. I can't imagine running with a cane would be safe or effective unless you're on a closed track. There is at least one guide dog program in the United States that trains dogs who can guide while running!

I’ve got my dog Carla, through them! We havent done run training, we were going to in 2020, probably won’t be able to as she’s been with me 2 years now. I’ve run with her a bit though.

Oh man I bet those dogs love their jobs! That’s super cool that they can guide while running it sounds like hard work

Someone brought this up in a blind athletics group I am part of and there was a very mixed response. As a mobility specialist I say no way Jose. That’s an accident waiting to happen. Having said that though, there are people in the group who do it and swear by it.

Interesting that people do it. I've done it for short distances for fun if out for a walk or something, I run a few feet, but it definitely seems like if you were to hit something with your cane, it could be very, very painful lol. Specially if you aren't expecting it and moving at a fast speed, obviously if running you'd be going pretty fast, faster than walking anyway.

I've heard about marathon runners who use telescoping canes. Telescoping canes aren't my favorite but they can be really light.

I feel like that is an accident waiting to happen!!! I would strongly suggest not to attempt that lol. I run with guides!!! Treadmill if I have to. Maybe at a high school track, honestly might work to run with a cane.

Oh yeah, I definitely wouldn't recommend it but people make their own choices.

Using a guide is usually the safest option for sure.

Oops, I realized I commented on your thread vs the question lol sorry!

Oh thats interesting. They are pretty light and well... Disposable feeling so I guess they could work for running.

I ran track in HS! I actually didn’t use a cane and they put me on the middle lane so I wouldn’t run off the track & I wasn’t penalized for running outside my lane as long as I got back in within six seconds.

Oh really? Nice, you have any vision at all? I personally have none, would be interesting to try that
thatawkwardcosplayer 3 points 2y ago
I have pretty limited vision, only color blobs for me and I can’t see unless it’s EXTREMELY close to my eyes. Think like you’re about to kiss someone close.

Hello, first of all it would be dangerous to run with a cane, secondly you wouldn't be able to run with a good technique. Guide dogs aren't the best idea as well, I mean when running on streets. Sometimes you must react very quick because there's a bicycle passing or a car. A human guide is the best option for short and long distance running.

Crikey I wouldn't run with a cane, you'd end up as a person kebab. I run with a buddy and we each hold onto one side of an eight inch rubber ring that's actually sold as a dog toy. I am trusting her with my life, but what're you gonna do.
