I'm legally blind but I can see well enough to not use a cane. I can't drive and I can't get a consistent ride to a job (if I could find one that would work for me). I'm good with computers and don't have many issues seeing them with increased text size except in certain circumstances. I'm currently receiving disability but I just can't live on this money.
Is there somewhere that can help me find a job I can do remotely without needing a college degree? I'm not opposed to learning a new skill.

If you get any leads let me know, I am in the exact same boat.

Hey. Check out Blind to Billionaire on YouTube. There's a lot of great ideas on this channel.
Also Beyond Vision is a company that employs visually impaired people. I emailed them asking about remote work opportunities. You could try this too.
Edit: is your username a Beatles/Grateful Dead reference? If so, those are two of my favorite songs.
Edit 2: I got a reply from Beyond Vision but they didn't have anything in my area. They did say they had some open positions and could help me relocate but I can't do that. Perhaps this might be something for you :)

I was job hunting during lock down, I'm not trained or qualified in anything, so I was just looking for basic roles, so many had gone online. remote was the term being used on normal jobsites. Good luck

Will do friend.

I would recommend doing an online job search. Some websites you could try are ZipRecruiter, Flex Jobs, and Indeed.
If you’re just looking for a small side job to make a little money, you could make offers on websites like Fiverr or UpWork.
Other jobs I would recommend are being an online proofreader, virtual assistant, customer service (UHaul or similar), and online tutor.

Thanks I'll look into these.
I play music so maybe I could make money on Fiverr doing that.
codeplaysleep1 points2y ago
You could also produce tracks and sell them on stock sites like pond5, audiojungle, premium beat, etc.
1i_rd [OP]1 points2y ago
Oh wow. I didn't even know about these thank you.
niamhweking1 points2y ago
Could you teach music, do lessons for kids?
1i_rd [OP]1 points2y ago
I could maybe give beginner level lessons. I don't know how comfortable I'd feel doing much beyond that without a little experience.
Good idea! Thanks.
niamhweking2 points2y ago
Alot of parents might just want that. I know I don't want to pay the rates of someone with a music or teaching degree and all the blooming levels and exams, especially if my kids will give up wanting lessons after 8 weeks something.
If you're honest with the parents just saying I'm good at music but I dont have qualifications. If I see talent or the child has potential I can't Foster I'll let you know and I can recommend someone

You’re welcome!

I was able to sign up with my local state department blind services. They are in the process of getting me set up. I know there are some resources available that will train new skill and/or assist with job placement. I would start with the state or call 211 if you have that locally. If you are overseas then I’m not sure what resources they have.
1i_rd [OP]1 points2y ago
You're in the US right?
Elleabee32 points2y ago
Yes I am
1i_rd [OP]1 points2y ago
Thank you. ❤️
Elleabee31 points2y ago
Welcome and good luck! I’d love to know how that works out for you!
littleglazed2 points2y ago
transcribing?
1i_rd [OP]1 points2y ago
Where can I get started with this? I'm a pretty proficient typist.
littleglazed2 points2y ago
not too knowledgeable unfortunately, i remember seeing some on mturk in my college days
there should be a transcriber community if you look, sounds like a lot of ppl get contracted with companies after doing piecemeal work for them
1i_rd [OP]1 points2y ago
Thanks I'll take a look and see if I can find a sub dedicated to it.

The fiver idea above is good. I do YouTube and some othe part time gigs.
It’s only a few hundred $$ a month but I’m not putting a lot of hours into it either.
You might look into customer service/ call center type work. It’s not glamour but it’s not that hard and will pay the bills. If that doesn’t sound like a good fit I’d encourage you to do it will looking for other opportunities, being employed demonstrates to future employers you’re probably going to work out
1i_rd [OP]2 points2y ago
What do you do on YouTube?
BlindLuck722 points2y ago
I do product reviews, companies send me stuff I review then sell the items, also post the videos on Amazon.
Make around $400/ month.
Takes some time to get rolling but for a side hustle it’s fun. Wouldn’t recommend it for full time work
1i_rd [OP]2 points2y ago
Could you tell me how you got into this? $400 is life changing money for me lol.
BlindLuck722 points2y ago
I started back in 2013 because I wanted to buy a camera but couldn’t really justify the purchase. Started doing reviews on stuff I already owned. I stopped in 2015 cause work was getting busy. Started back up during the pandemic because like a lot of people I was bored lol. It’s much more competitive now but still doable. The key for me is I turn around and sell a lot of the things I review which helps the cashflow. You could also do videos on a topic you know a lot about and costs would be low.
Fiver might be a good way for you to build new skills and learn the “tricks of the trade” from others

To be clear I’m not really recommending YouTube, I was just trying to support the fiver comment above. A side gig can be flexible and a few hundred $$ of guilt free money is nice.
I am legally blind so in same boat as you
1i_rd [OP]2 points2y ago
I know. I was just curious about what you do with YouTube.
BlindLuck722 points2y ago
Anything’s possible :).
tuvda1 points2y ago
online tutor.

Since you said you get disability I am assuming you live in the United States. Working off of that premise contact your local commission of the blind or whatever the name might be for your particular state. They could probably direct you to the states para transit that works with your public transit system. It varies from state to state as does the quality, but that might help you as far as your transportation back-and-forth from a job. Also ask them about the Randolph Shepherd act program which is a program that helps blind individuals get into small businesses. Such as vending Machines, cafeterias, coffee shops and snack bars. They are generally in federal buildings. Though they can be found in state locations as well as others. I do it in my state and it has definitely helped supplement my disability payments. Though some do extremely well in my opinion most do OK Ienjoy doing it. You get out of it what you put into it.
1i_rd [OP]2 points2y ago
Thanks I'll try this. This might be what works for me. I just want to supplement my disability.
