"Be My Eyes" App - What does the visually impaired community think of this app? Helpful? Terrible? Ok?(self.Blind)
submitted by anteatertrashbin
Hello r/Blind!!!
I just signed up to be a volunteer on the "Be My Eyes" app, which connects the visually impaired with sighted people to assist with tasks such as, "what is the expiry date on this milk?" or "can you help with my router setup".
I got my first call yesterday and I was so excited to assist but our call was disconnected.... :-(
So for the people on the other end that use this service, is this a good service for you all? Or is there another app or way the sighted community can help?
Thanks!

it's a nice idea, but I need it so infrequently that the sheer number of volunteers just doesn't scale.
Also I'm afraid I prefer Bespecular: I'm so often in a position where a live video stream isn't needed and a discrete photo with a question is the just the thing ...

I'm really surprised that they didn't add this option to Be My Eyes. I am connected to the Founder of the application via Linkedin. Do you mind if I tell him your suggestion?

not at all. I'd strongly advise seeing how bespecular does it: you can take a series of pictures, write or verbally record a question, rate responses as they come in and then stop responses when you're happy with them. It's a very efficient system.

Please do! It's crazy that we're not leveraging this gigantic pool of volunteers to answer simple visual questions.

Hey, I wanted to download bespecular app but couldn't find it in the playstore.... Do you know why that may be?

I think it’s a lovely app. I don’t use it a ton since I’m always with people. For the times I was alone it definitely helped! Thanks for volunteering!!!

It's a nice app, although I don't use it much. Because my country is under sanctions it doesn't work here, and if I want to use it I have to open a VPN first; It's too much trouble, especially that I live with my family and usually they can help.
I think they really need to add a picture feature to it as well, something like BeSpecular. Also a feature that lets the volunteer see your screen when it's necessary.

Sounds like you should be on a VPN 100% of the time, honestly.

On my computer I'm almost always on VPN, but on the phone it uses too much battery.

That's frustrating. I know some VPN protocols aren't nice to phone batteries, and don't know which providers use the better ones.
