PC Screen Reader Suggestions? (self.Blind)
submitted by SleepyOtter3
Hello,

My partner is blind and we are looking for a screen reader that is either free or very affordable. Absolutely must be easy to use and ideally have some voice options (does this even exist?). Which screen readers have you used that you really like? Thanks!

NVDA is free and works really well

$1 is free and straightforward as far as screen readers go. It is also one of the most used, so web content that is build with accessibility in mind should be fully compatible.

I use NVDA. It's free

I use NVDA. It's great!
I did accessibility testing for awhile, and it was amazing how they kept up with any errors I had.

Throwing in my vote for NVDA. Be sure to check out their add-ons as well.

Your 2 best Options are either NVDA, Nonvisual Desktop Accsess, or JAWS for windows. NVDA is freeware, though if you can it’s cool to donate a little bit to keep them going. If you’re in the United States Jaws has an annual license model. You pay approximately $100 for a year of use. Otherwise, it sounds like JAWS might be out of your budget.

Depending on what you want to do NVDA should be fine. JAWS has some extra features that some of us find useful and others find unnecessary. NVDA takes up a smaller footprint, but JAWS seems to work with more obscure software. It can come down to personal preference, and I use both of them.

The websites are: for JAWS http://www.freedomscientific.com and for NVDA http://www.nvaccess.org.

Well, the best are nvda, jaws and zdsr. Nvda is free and quite good, zdsr has couple of licences, but I think you should try nvda.

If you use a Mac or iOS devices, don't forget that VoiceOver is built into the operating systems already.

If you choose NVDA don't forget to read their manual

While it's a long read it's a must!https://www.nvaccess.org/files/nvda/documentation/userGuide.html
