Use Pihole to improve screen reader performance on websites with ads(self.Blind)
submitted by Altie-McAltface
Pihole is a network-wide ad blocker that works as a DNS server giving out fake IP addresses when a host asks for a domain known to serve ads. It has improved the performance of VoiceOver on my iPad. I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't improve battery life as well given how much these 3rd party ads cause my CPU to sweat.

I use UBlock Origin for much the same reason. Like night and day!

PiHole is a DNS server for your network, so it will stop just about all ads for your entire network instead of just one device. It is great. Highly recommend it if you have a spare raspberry pie laying around.

Except the rpi doesn't have very fast throughput, so it slows down your network.

I mean, it all really depends on the scale I suppose. For a single person and non-power user of the Internet, it would be perfect. However, for someone running multiple servers and constantly eating through bandwith yeah you would want some thing beefier.

Yeah that's me. I'm a data hoarder lol. I have here a rackmount server upon which I might install pihole once I get all the cabling done so that all my traffic goes through it.

The reason I personally prefer UBlock is because UBlock, and other browser extensions, are able to opperate on the URI level, whereas DNS blocking can only block entire domains. This sometimes matters when you need to be a bit more precise in your filtering.

I use uBlock Origin, which works really well. I also use adblock for Chrome, and one specifically for Youtube, because Youtube ads are annoying, and they've been getting past my ad blockers lately.

I was playing with the thought of getting a raspberry pie for a while. You could do a lot with these things. Including running your own server for NVDA-remote and your own server for smart home stuff. But I have no idea, where to start. I mean, you have to build this thing yourself. I almost always had laptops. I just recently switched over to a desktop computer. And just since then, I started learning, how to open it and replace parts. How did you guys build your raspberry pi? Is it possible without sided help?

Yes it does help but it is really easy to block too much.

That doesn't really work with an adblocker. It will work with something like NoScript, though. I set uBlock to block everything, including those stupid social media widgets. The only way you can block too much, is to turn off Javascript, and break the site.
