Where do you put your cane when at a restaurant (self.Blind)
submitted by Formal-Aardvark9968
Hello my fellow VIP's,

Im not 100% blind but I do rely on a white cane when i'm outside of familiar areas. I don't need it in my house cause i know this place like the back of my hand. With that being said, I am wondering how others that use a cane store it while out and about.

when I go out to eat at a restaurant or other social establishments. I usually fold my cane in half and slide it behind me on the seat I am sitting at. I tried putting it under my seat a few times but ultimately i felt uncomfortable doing so. I constantly felt like it was in the way and people might not be paying attetion and trip over it. I am comfortable with how I use my cane and "put it away" when I need to I am just curious if others do it the same way of if you have your own quirks when it comes to it.

Good question. I usually fold mine up completely, and put it under my chair on the floor, or on the seat next to me, if I’m in a booth.

My husband and I both use rigid canes, and you definitely have to be more intentional about storing them than a folding one. It's easy in most booths to put it against the inside wall, but we have to get more creative if we're at an open table in the middle of a room. Putting them across the floor under the table has tripped people. One of us will usually explore a bit and let the other know if we've found a wall or partition, then put both canes there. If we can't find somewhere, we've very occasionally asked our server where we could put them out of the way. Or if a sighted person is dining with us, we'll ask them.

I usually try to fold mine up and keep it in between my feet with my feet straddling it to keep it in place it doesn’t get in the way and it’s easy to fine in the end.

Usually either behind me against the back of the seat, lying across it (fold-up) or beneath one of my legs, trapping it between my leg and the seat.
I bought an outdoor superdry jacket a while back and on the inside left side is a long deep pocket, which is perfect for putting it in.

I forgot about the jacket method with the deep pockets.

Either at the end of the table, end of the booth so it’s next to me, on my lap or in a bag.

I fold mine up and hook it to my belt.

I've been using a dog for years, but when I had a caine, I'd fold it all the way up, and I'd put it on my chair next to my leg.

Sometimes I had pants with those loops carpenters use for hammers, and I'd tuck it in their.

I either put it directly under my seat, folded, although sometimes I still have trouble finding it as I may have kicked it during the meal.

Or if I am in a booth I might put it beside me folded on the booth. It all depends on situation and what I deem proper etiquette.

On the floor.

I fold mine up and put it under my chair then put one of my feet on it so I don’t leave it there on accident or forget where it is

Usally folded and tucked under my leg, or left extended fully but leaned against a secure position where it won't be tripped on, like the inside of a booth

On a rare occasion I'll fold it completely and stow it in my bag, as I carry a large laptop style bag basically everywhere. (Side note: I keep my cane or a spare in this bag all the time when I'm not using it)

Wow, thanks for sharing everyone! Such great feedback and carrying a bag makes so much sense. I think I will start to travel with a small backpack now. I can bring water and other things with me.

Fold it up and stick it in a belt holster.

I would absolutely carry a rigid cane because they're just better, but it's a compromise to practicality to carry a folding one.

If you're wearing stuff that doesn't really let you do that it does become a pain but no more than carrying a purse or something.

It depends on whether or not I have a backpack with me at the time. If I do, I put my white cane and support cane in my backpack and the backpack between my feet. If I don't, I put them both between my feet so I always know where they are. If I'm sitting on a bench, I put them between me and the person next to me, folded, of course.

I fold it and put it under the chair /table.

My (teenaged) kiddo carries a small backpack and folds it up into there.

I usually folds up the cane and place it on a chair or even on the table, away from food. Placing the cane under the table has not worked for me sometimes under the table can have fallen food, can be kinda dirty.

When in a restaurant or bar, I usually just hang my cane in a nearby coat hanger, because frequent folding and unfolding can make the string inside the cane loosen up.

Luckily I still have enough vision left that locating a nearby hanger (and my cane hanging on it) is still possible to me.

I have a holster that clips to my belt, pants, or bag so I fold it up and out it in there.
BlindGirlSees 1 points 2y ago
I usually put it on the floor. But I’ve recently started carrying this big purse with huge pockets. So now I just fold it up and put it in there.

I bought a hammer holder at the hardware store, fold my cane up and put it in there. The hammer holder hangs off my belt pack.

Fold it up and put it in a bag. If there's no bag, I stick it in my lap (chair) or next to me on the seat (booth). Rigid canes I lean on the wall next to the table.
