Using the JLab Jbuds Frames for discretely audio (self.Blind)
submitted by B-dub31
Like a lot of visually impaired folks, I use Talkback and Android Assistant a lot. I hated using my phone in public because I'd either use hqve to my smartphone speakers or earbuds. I don't really like earbuds that much when I'm out because I can barely see, and with earbuds in, can barely hear what's going on around me. I always thought interacting with others wearing earbuds seems rude and aloof.

I recently purchased the JLabs Jbud Frames. They are basically small speakers that clip onto your glasses. They're not perfect, but they have been a game changer for me. Now I can more discretely interact with my phone while maintaining my situational awareness.

The sound quality is good. These aren't ear buds and they can get overwhelmed by loud environmental sounds, but they are fine for listening to music and podcasts. There is a bit of sound leakage, but it's not bad at all. My wife can tell I'm listening to music, but can't make out what it is I'm playing.

I've used them pretty extensively and they last about 8 hours of use on a charge and pretty much all day with light use. You can even use each side independently to double the battery life. Each side has a physical button that controls the volume, answers rejects calls, and activates the Google Assistant or Siri.

People will notice them on your glasses, and they do add some weight as well. There is minor sound leak, but I'd say it'ss very minimal. But the thing I like most is the price: $50. I had been considering Echo Frames or Razer Anzu smart glasses, but with custom lenses, both those options would cost well over $300. While I may some day switch to dedicated smartglasses as they become more streamlined and affordable, I think the Jlabs Frames are a great option for now.

I really like mine and they are extremely useful for someone who uses Talkback or Voiceover.

How far back can they sit on your glasses? I would actually be interested if they would help keep my sunglasses more steady when walking or running.

I'm invested in the Apple ecosystem so I use my AirPods Pro for general use. To your point about having situational awareness, the AirPods Pro has a transparency mode which allows for unhindered noise of the environment. It sounds like you don't have any earbuds on while at the same time playing your music privately. Additionally, it has noise cancelling if you want to block out ambient noise. Of course, you can turn any enhancement off to get a normal earbud experience so that however they fit determines how much you hear from the outside. Maybe these will work with your Android phone or you can find something equivalent?

I wear mine between my temples and ears. They do add so.e weight to your glasses if that's whatbyou'd like.

I have Galaxy Buds that feature the ambient sound mode. I guess I'm just old school, but I always feel like wearing earbuds and talking to someone is rude. I constantly took mine in and out when in public, but my Frames fill that role now. I use my buds when I really want to focus on the sound quality.

I wear cochlear implants and I use a neckloop to listen to the phone. I sometimes have the opposite problem; people don't know I'm listening to something, they talk to me, I don't hear them, and they think I'm being rude lol. Oh well, I don't think there's any getting around it for me.

Yeah, that would be tough. I guess you win some and lose some...lol.

I bought mine direct from Jlabs, but they have them at Walmart or Best Buy.
