Other than chores and walking, what can I do while listening to an audiobook? I start getting anxious from just sitting there and only listening; if I shut my eyes, I just get sleepy.(self.Blind)

Hey everyone, recently blind man here. The biggest struggle for me so far has been the uncanny boredom. I got into listening to audiobooks, but unless I am doing a chore or walking, I start getting really bored and a bit sleepy.
What are some activities I can do to ease this internal tension when listening to something?

I would really suggest getting the Old Time Radio app. It has thousands of old radio shows. Comedy, mystery, suspense, detective noir, adventure, even movies adapted for radio. Keep in mind that most are from the 30s and 40s. But a few ran all the way into the 70s. It can be a little more engaging than audiobooks because they'll have different actors reading their parts and there is sound effects. It could be really fun for you. It is for me. Theater is, after all, the theater of the mind. Especially if you were born sighted.

in the UK they still make radio shows. i listen to one about a killer priest every Sunday. the sound of the gravel as he walks into his garden is beautiful.
is this app free? i have never heard of it before. i am super interested.

I believe it was. The Old Time Radio Player.
And that's awesome that the UK still has em.

This is such an underrated suggestion. I second this, old time comedy hits a spot that modern comedy can't for me.

Oh definitely.

Try things that may sound crazy. Like wire twisting. take wire and twist and bend it to create sculptures or use clay, paper or anything that will dry when your done. I learned how to paint and become a blind visual artist. I was unsured but motivated by John Bramblitt. He told me there is an artist in all of us. He said we just hold it in because we are afraid of being judged. He said just do it, enjoy it and if someone says something negative, just say F-you I’m blind! John is also blind and has sold art in over 130 countries. Check out Dan Parker from Columbus GA. He is a blind machinist that makes Designer aluminum pens and specialty items as need, oh by the way, he has built a corvette and is well on his way to breaking a world speed record. He already hold a world record at Bonneville salt flats on a three wheeler that he designed and built. George Wurtzel, you may know him as the Subaru guy from the commercial on TV. He also is an artist that specializes in wood furniture and wood turnings that he sells from his art gallery in Tennessee. Before that he build Engines for Volkswagen USA. I could go on and on because when i was in that very dark place that most of us have been, I decided to research amazing blind people. I mean other than Hellen Keller. What I found, I could fill a book with. So don’t Limit yourself by what other people think. If you can think it, up figure out a work arounds on how to do it. Then go for it and Never give up!

I have had this issue for years! I think there are only two options:
1. Get some kind of fidget-y activity: Doodling, knitting, etc.. 2. Embrace physical activities: Walk for even longer! Do chores in the kitchen. Get on an exercise bike.
I find everything else too distracting from the book. It's just stuff to keep some part of my body active at all times while listening. Relaxing completely is the enemy with audio content.

Stationary bike, start doing planks. Or don't be afraid to hit pause and put the book down and take breaks. If I lay down and listen to a book I'm going to o fall asleep. Another part that people don't talk about enough is that you can hav a great book, but without a fantastic reader it can become a lame book. On the opposite end of the spectrum you have okay books that the reader makes into a fantastic book. Read the reviews of the narration! One I really felt was run was Journey to the Center of the Earth read by Tim Curry.

Glad I'm not the only one with the issue! Thanks for the advice!

If I'm honest, that boredom / anxiety is something to be addressed. Distractions aren't long-term solutions.
Get into mindfulness meditation. Check out the Headspace app as a good introduction to it.

I do meditate, but rather infrequently. I'll try to get into it more to see if it helps. Thank you!

You're very welcome. There's a book on audible called 'The science of mindfulness' by Ronal Siegel. It's so, so useful as a good guide for learning more about mindfulness meditation.
What genres do you like to listen to?

Oh awesome, I'll actually download it right now. I'm newly blind so this is my first audiobook. I'm listening to Neil Gaiman's Sandman. I loved American gods, and this one's swell too.

I feel there's no cheery way of saying this, but - 'welcome to the club'.
I hope you're finding your feet and not coming into too much difficulty? If there's anything I can do, just ask.
