I'm so tired of all this. Actors pretend to be something they're not all the time. It's their job. We are talking about make believe, here. If nine blind people who can't act and one not blind persons who can audition for a role, I would rather them cast the son of a bitch who can act. Know what I'm sayin?

I understand where you’re coming from, but the thing is, they aren’t blind.
They aren’t gonna go through what we do on a daily basis. It would be like a non-autistic person pretending to have a meltdown on tv.
An autistic person would see that and think: that’s not right, and non autistics would think: that’s how all autistics behave.
I don’t really give a shit what people think about me but when it comes to entire groups of people and tv, I do.

In fact, there was a similar controversy just recently. https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-55931544 https://www.bustle.com/entertainment/sia-music-movie-autism-controversy-explained

Ah ok.

I mean, Dustin Hoffman and Leo DiCaprio both visited with and studied the behaviors of special needs people and did a fine job acting as them.
bradley220 points1y ago
Did they?
Honestly I’m not a huge TV person, but I just feel like people who have the thing that is the point of the show should get a chance to act in it or at least be in the room to give pointers.

If they can act, absolutely give them a chance.

There is nothing wrong with anyone playing anyone if they can do a good job of it.
The big problem here is that people tend to complain that some fictional character does not represent them personally. Well of course it won't. Everyone's different. Just because you happen to share a characteristic with someone doesn't mean you should expect that person to share your worldview. To use Molly as an example (sorry Molly, it's just an example, you're fine) I don't share her worldview in all particulars, but that's okay, I wouldn't expect her to be a carbon copy of me just because we both have sight stuff going on. And she's a real person! We shouldn't expect fictional characters to be copies of any one of us either. They have to be a plausible someone, they don't have to be me.
Personally I thought Murphy Mason was pretty good, but mainly because I have lots of things in common with her. Possibly not the hard drinking and being a loser. Well not the loser part. Cough.

Fuck paywalls.
Is there a right way to act disabled? Yes. Find disabled people in the vein you're going for and ask them every goddamn stupid question in your tiny actor/actress brain and ask them if they have any advice. Not one person. Ten people. Twenty people. Every motherfucker you can find. Collate. Take some fucking pride in your work. Do the gig right, goddammit. Because you're not representing Molly Burke who you found on youtube. You're representing all of us blind people who hate that numb cunt. You're representing all of the OTHER blind people who love her for... some reason I can't fathom.
It's any fuckin' role. Are you working at a quickie mart? Pull a James Woods and work in one for a month. Goddamn people not taking any goddamn pride in what they attach their goddamn name to.

Just out of interest what do you dislike about molly berck? I’ve never seen any of her videos so can’t comment either way but I’m interested as to your perspective.
BlindRyan10 points1y ago
She's sheltered, she's a vapid idiot, she gives patently wrong information, and she makes all blind people look like we can't function in society.
soundwarrior200 points1y ago
Interesting can you give me an example of this?
BlindRyan11 points1y ago
I can't find them off the top of my head because she's put out so many videos but one example is she uses her mother to tell her when she's on her period and to find plugs and other obvious shit that anyone with a brain can do. The most recent thing to outrage my blind friends and myself is she's decided she's going to get into gaming now that it's "cool" whereas we all have been gaming since our childhoods and making it work for us (whereas she's just demanding gaming be made accessible for her.)
I've been an advocate for 7 years. It's not that fucking simple, lady. Especially the games you want made accessible for you.
