Reddit replies stripping newline characters (self.Blind)
submitted by mdizak

One of the joys of being blind is when websites keep changing things on you. You spend hours figuring out how to properly navigate and use a site, only to wake up one day and find out their dev team changed everything on you.

Anywho... this has been happening for a while now, but anyone else have this issue with Reddit? When I reply to a thread now, it always strips all of my newline characters out of the reply. If I'm making say a 4 paragraph reply, it ends up looking like one massive run on setence.

I find the only way to fix this is edit the post, put the newlines characters in, save it, and then it looks fine. However, upon actually making the reply, it always trips all newline characters out of it.

Anyone else getting this, or is it just me? Any workarounds? If it matters any, due to how Reddit works, I always just type my replies in a text editor first, then copy and paste into the Reddit comment box.

I've not experienced this on Mac or mobile.

If you're using the Markdown editor, instead of the "fancy" one, you need to leave two spaces at the end of the line if you want a single line break and a blank line after if you want a new paragraph. That's standard markdown syntax.

So ...on Windows, this doesn't seem to happen to me.

There, that's a newline character right there. And the textfield is a multiline edit area, so it shouldn't be stripping them, are you on Mobile, OP?

Your post has extra paragraphs so you might have hit enter twice per paragraph, while in the fancy pants editor. I'm that editor, you can edit text visually, by using the bold, italics, link, etc. buttons. You also get a paragraph each time you hit enter.

In the old editor, you add asterisks around text for bold and italics and use parentheses and brackets for links and so on. In the old editor, you get a paragraph after hitting enter twice.

Make sure to check what mode you're in. There should be a "switch to fancy pants editor" or the opposite around the text area.
