Do UV rays advance the progression Retinitis Pigmentosa? (self.Blind)
submitted by AangsArrow
Essentially, I've just been diagnosed with RP a couple days ago and just had a genetic exam done to confirm things. I'm wondering if wearing sunglasses will slow down RP or will regular anti-glare coating on my prescription glasses be enough? Or does any of this even make a difference at all?

Cant comment on your specific question, but if you live in the USA, try to minimize your exposure to LED lights. We dont mandate any filters to prevent retinal damage or nervous system overstimulation (migraines, cluster headaches, agitation...etc)

According to John Hopkin's Medicine, it says it might help.

"At this time, there is no specific treatment for retinitis pigmentosa. However, protecting your eye’s retina by using UV sunglasses may help delay the start of symptoms. "

Symptoms started years ago so rip

Wearing sunglasses to protect your eyes from UV is still good, since other eye conditions can form from UV exposure (cataracts, mac degen).

I have retinitis pigmentosa and my low vision specialist told me that it's a good idea to protect my eyes from sunlight. I wear sunglasses and a hat with a brim whenever I'm outside in the sun. It's not so much about slowing down progression, it's more to just protect your eyes in general. Sun exposure is harmful for everyone's eyes, but it's especially important for people with vision impairment to protect their eyes, especially people whose impairments involve night blindness or poor night vision. The more bright light you expose your eyes to the harder time you'll have adjusting to low light conditions. At least that's my experience!

Sorry for the late reply but wow I've never thought about that way. I have a really difficult time in the dark I should probably focus on wearing sunglasses more so the adjustment period won't be so crazy. Thank you!

I know I’m replying way late, but I’ve been diagnosed with RP and my specialist said that protecting my eyes from UV was the most important thing I could do.
