Seeking recommendations for calendar/scheduler app(self.Blind)
submitted by Acidulated
Posting on behalf of my dad who has macular degeneration; less than 10% vision remaining.
“I am seeking recommendations for an app that will help me schedule and read out future appointments. Siri and google have decent apps for basic appointments but I can’t figure out how to verbally add an attachment or note to the appointment, especially if the note lists a date or refers to a previous appointment.
I’m trying to figure out a way to keep track of information I need to know about an appointment - things I used to write down in a paper diary.
Can you recommend an app or system?“
Thanks for any help. He needs to be able to keep his diary organised and detailed in order to continue to work.

Is your father relying on voice assistants alone?
I would consider magnification (Magnification Gesture on Android or similar on iOS) to leverage his remaining sight and screen readers (TalkBack on Android and VoiceOver on iOS) otherwise.

I have done a few custom setups where people need more detail from calendars than siri and Alexa provide. The most comprehensive involved using a Google Script to email the details of each event, which was then read aloud by Alexa in the form of an email. Hardly perfect, but it worked in this case, although this was more for getting data out to a user rather than letting them input.
Generally speaking, touch-screen access is used to focus the notes/description area of a calendar on a phone or tablet, or a keyboard when using a computer or web-based calendar. Screen readers provide relatively comprehensive access to these tools and almost all OSes provide dictation as an input option, although full voice control is more difficult or more expensive, depending where you go.
I have used physical items; graph paper with tactile stickers representing events on recordable media (like a Penfriend labeler), if the user is unable to use a screen or keyboard.
Dolphin's Guide Connect package may provide an expanded calendaring option - it works either on computer, tablet, or as a television set-top-box. I don't know of any way for a smart speaker to provide this level of detail without a custom skill or whatever Google's version of skills is.

Thanks, lots of food for thought there

Use voiceover, not just Siri

Alot of smart phones come with built in voice assistants like siri and alexa and whatnot which I've found super helpful personally, has he tried using the built in calendar with them?

Thanks we have, the issue is that he needs to add extra information to the appointments. We haven’t figured out how to add an attachment or note by voice alone.

Oh yeah true most AI assistants only save limited info about an appointment
