How to unzip files in windows using a screen reader? (self.Blind)
submitted by Wooden_Suit5580
Does anyone know where I can find a tutorial on how to unzip archived files in windows 10 using a screen reader? I can use windows narrator and NVDA well but I’m not certain on how to unzip files.
Any help would be appreciated
Thank you

Open context menu (That's the applications key) and there should be an extract option. If there isn't, install an archiver such as win rar.

not all keyboards have an applications key. shift+f10 is the shortcut for the context menu without one.
Windows puts an "Extract all" option in there, which if you follow the popups, makes a folderw with the .zip's contents

What you want to do is perform a right click, which you can do with the applications key on your keyboard. If your keyboard doesn't have that, you can invoke a right click by press shift + F10. If you select extract here, Windows will extract all of the files into that directory. If you select extract to folder name, then Windows will extract all of the files into a folder of the same name as the archive, which I specifically like doing to stay organized. Hope this helps.

I dont have screen reader, but I can describe what I see when I unzip a file in windows 10. Not sure if this will help, but here goes.

Step 1. Locate file. In file explorer, it has a type of compressed (zipped) folder.
Step 2a. If I double click the file, I see the folder that is compressed. There is a button in file explorer that says extract all. The button is ocated below the normal menu bar, but above the normal folder directory and fille/folder window. Essentially a new tab appeared with these options.
Step 2b. You can also right click the file. Options appear, and on my machine an extract all option appears 5 rows down.
Step 3. After hitting extract all from either step 2a or 2b, a new window appears having you specify where you want the files extract to go. A file path name and a browse button appear. An check box below says show extracted when complete. The final tow buttons are extract and cancel.
Step 4. A new file explorer window appears with the files extracted. This is assuming you checked show extracted when complete.

Hope this helps.

Just some friendly advice. Most screen reading software works specifically through keyboards and often doesn't follow the conventional ways most people navigate. So when you describe where a button is on the screen, for example, that information doesn't usually help the person who is blind. :)
