Of course you can use it :) it’s a writing system, anyone is allowed to use it :)

You can use braille. It isn’t like there aren’t enough slots for you to take one away from another deserving person. As a matter of fact, I am using braille now to read and to write this. Keep on keeping on!

How do you braille? I only have a slate and stylus
wilcjames5 points1y ago
I use a braille display. I grew up using a slate and stylus and a Perkins brailler.

If it makes your life easier (or more interesting), go for it. I used to take class notes using Norse runes (not very useful, but made life interesting).
Braille is a tool for storing and retrieving information that uses your fingers and not your eyes. There are plenty of good reasons to use Braille while sighted (you can watch something and read something at the same time, you can read in the dark without eye strain, you can see what all the braille on signs says; if you are using a braille typewrite-style keyboard you don't ever have to move your hands off the keys.
There are not any rules that govern how much vision loss you must have to use it. If you are losing vision I would recommend learning braille while you still have some vision.

I mean I can read and write both ways. Why not? You do you pikachu. If it makes things better for you then do it. Dooooo ittttt. We have people who use sign language who can hear but have issues speaking. Make the world more accessible

There are no laws about who can and cannot use braille haha. You just might have trouble getting free materials.

I learned braille as a child even though I still had (very low) vision in one eye and was still able to read magnified print.
MangoBoy035 points1y ago
Yes, anyone can use it
Winnmark5 points1y ago
It was actually invented for the military.
I know a few basics so I can better interact with my completely blind friend, & my mom learnt the first 5 or 6 letters of the alphabet.

I'm trying to learn contracted braille now. I know most uncontacted braille.

Go for it. You’re using a tool that’s helpful to you. You’re not preventing anyone else who needs Braille from accessing it. You’re not perpetuating harmful stereotypes by using it (unlike, for instance, someone pretending their ill-trained pet is a guide dog). I don’t know why anyone in the sight loss community would care about you using Braille.
Sighted people (or even other blind people), as far as I’m concerned, don’t get to decide whether someone else is “blind enough” to use something that helps them (unless, I guess we’re talking about criteria for things like government funding; they do get to decide who is blind enough).
Go forth and use all the Braille.

Plus it's a pain having to use a slate and stylus at time. I prefer a simple brailler to take notes on or write my stories.
kaishawna1 points1y ago
Thanks. I use it to take small notes and such. I also have a slight visual impairment. Also I'm looking to purchase a brailler of some sort
DrillInstructorJan2 points1y ago
Why would anyone care?
People just learn it for fun, it's not like you're stopping anyone else using it.
kaishawna1 points1y ago
It's just that I have grown up reading some print and never really reading braille, so I'm not really used to using it regularly. Plus *some* family member said I don't need braille because I'm not *blind enough* to use it.
DrillInstructorJan2 points1y ago
Doesn't really matter if you are or not, really. Do what works.
Lots of people report having family members and friends say oh, you're not blind enough to use some technique. Honestly what does it matter, if it's useful who cares.

I felt similar about using a cane. I have enough sight that I can get around without one if I have to, and in areas I know super well, I won't carry one. But in crowded areas or for crossing busy streets, I use it because it makes things easier.
If using braille is going to help you in any way, go for it. As another poster has said, braille is a tool. And it's a tool that will never run out because you can just learn to use it. You using braille is not going to prevent someone with less vision from also using braille.
Think of it like this. If you're a native English speaker, but one day you decide "Hey, I think I'm going to learn to speak Spanish." From then on, you buy all your books in Spanish. Why would anyone think that's wrong?
Nighthawk3212 points1y ago
It is okay for anyone to use braille! No person should gatekeep someone from learning another language. Really cool of you to do that, actually.
BIIANSU2 points1y ago
Sure! Nobody cares. Just so long as you don't pretend to be blind? Haha
retrolental_morose2 points1y ago
As a totally blind person I have no access to print.
I've found the Orbit Reader invaluable, even though I have had options for much more expensive devices through study grants and things, nothing beets the boot time and dot clarity of the Orbit. For making notes it's amazing. Slow to read a whole novel on perhaps, but handy around the house.
there is also software that lets you use Braille on phones and tablets as input, of course; MBraille, Braille Screen input, Braille Keyboard.

Hell yes you can! If it feels better for you, than go for it. Never feel you can't use something just because you don't 'need' to.
