Looking For Help With Resources For My Blind Student(self.Blind)
submitted by jtluebbe
Greetings! I teach and am the test coordinator for a rural high school in Colorado. Our school is conducting an unofficial PSAT practice test in a couple of weeks and we recently had a student enroll who is almost completely blind and is learning braille. Since it is an unofficial administration (just practice) I can not order this test through College Board.
So, what I am looking for specifically is where I can purchase/acquire her a braille copy of any edition of the PSAT or any other resources that might be helpful for this student. Thanks!

Could the student take the exam in a private room with a volunteer/teacher reading the questions and answer options to them?

Yes have a reader and scribe for the student

The Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind may have resources, as well. But, I think the TVI would know this and may have already tried. Still worth a check, if not.

I go there. They probably do. I am too young to be taking this type of stuff. But my guess is they have it.

Oh cool! Sounds like a good guess. I think many schools for the blind provide instructional resources statewide.

The student's Teacher of the Visually Impaired would be better acquainted with available resources to answer this question.

She was the one who approached me about this so I thought I would try and help.

Hi there! I'm a TVI. Practice tests are always a doozy. If you have any PDF versions, you can break them and clean them up in Google docs and then the braillist can either emboss the word document or the student can use a screen reader or braille display to read the test. If the braillist or TVI have access to an OCR device, they can scan a hard copy of the test and convert it to a Word document as well.
These are not fast fixes but they don't take too long to do either!

I was using Kaplan to study for the GRE a few months back. I have low vision and was able to see the resources on the screen with accessibility functions. I took a peek at some of the other visual accommodations that they had and they said that they could get resources for their students in braille.
They may be able to provide you with a few SAT practice exams in Braille.

Contact University or Northern Colorado. They have a strong TVI program there.

Try your local blind center. Or local braille library. They may have something in braille for your student.

Great idea! I just email the Colorado Talking Book Library so we will see what they come up.

I've been trying to look to get some braille worksheet and learn some braille contractions. I know the basic contractions. P stands for people, y stands for you and so on

The Hadley Institute for the Blind and Visually Impaired offers a highly regarded correspondence course in contracted braille.
