Weird voiceover problem (self.Blind)
submitted by SightlessBastard
Hi everyone,
So, I noticed a problem with voiceover, that I had for a while now. And I was wondering, if I’m the only one, who has this problem.
Sometimes, when I click on a link to a website on Twitter or Reddit, voiceover freezes for a while. Usually, that lasts only for three seconds or so. Then, when I try to navigate the website, it reacts very sluggish. When I for example swipe to the right, I first hear the clicking sound, and then like three or four seconds later, voiceover starts to speak.
It is actually kind of annoying. And the only solution I found so far, is to restart my phone.
I use an iPhone SE 2020.
I haven’t heard anyone mentioning it so far. So, just out of curiosity, do you guys know this problem?

When you click the links, are they opening in Safari? Do you have a ton of tabs open in Safari? Try clearing your Safari cache/delete browsing data and close all your tabs and see if that's still an issue. Another thing you can try is clearing your networld data, but that will remove all your saved wi-fi networks so use it as more of a last resort. It can also depend on the type of site you are opening and how many other things are running on your phone at the same time. Are you closing apps you aren't using at the time?

I have tried these thingsfor now. So far, it hasn’t happened again. It only happens sometimes. There is no particular rule to it. I guess, I will wait for now.

Well, keep track of the sites and situations that cause this issue since that would be important to help understand and break down the issue. Certain apps and sites can make VO get sluggish, especially media-heavy sites or apps like Kik. If your phone has background app refresh on and you have a bunch of apps open, that can also cause system-wide lag, or if your phone is running updates in the App Store if you have that set to automatically keep things up to date. Basically, just need more specific info to help figure out your issue, but if things seem to be working now, that's good.

I have the same problem on Reddit sproadically, on desktop with NVDA. It also occurs with MS Office, specifically Word. Word just doesn't speak at all unless I alt-tab out and back to it.

For Reddit and websites, it just pasues voice on everything when it freezes, even other websites that have already loaded for awhile. I always figured it was an issue with NVDA or my computer. Maybe it's a Reddit cookie/scripting/ads thing?

Are you using Reddit directly from the iPhone browser (Safari) or an app like RedditIsFun?

I have never experienced it on my computer.
For Reddit, I am using dystopia. For Twitter are use Twitterrific. But it never really mattered. Once it started, it would happen any time, no matter if I would use dystopia, Twitterrific or Safari. Only through restarting my phone I was able to fix it so far.
