Schools (self.Blind)
submitted by vivilonga
Hello everyone, I am needing advice/ guidance. I have a daughter who is almost 12. She has always attended a mainstream school. My issue is she behind with her Braille reading along with having no friends.
I want her to get up to speed academically and make friends, this breaks my heart. I want her to attend a school for the blind where she can learn and interact with others. I’m looking for a school that can teach her music or some others activities. Can you guys share which schools are good and why. Thank you.

Maybe one of these programs at Perkins in MA could work for your daughter and family?

I'm sorry to hear your daughter has difficulty finding friends. My close cousin had the same issue and only had a few very close friends but he really loved them. He went to a public school his entire life but he took private piano lessons starting around the age of 6 and is amazing at it to this day, he is 30. He can play anything in an instant it's amazing. If you don't find any ideal suggestions for music schools you can hopefully end up finding the right music teacher that is patient and can help your daughter with whatever instrument she would love to learn. Once she figures out music theory for one instrument it's pretty much the way it goes for the majority of instruments. As my cousin picked up the piano, he now picks up a guitar, ukelele or bass guitar like nothing because he understands music theory and has been trained. Just my ideas. Hope I helped in some way!

That’s amazing! I’ve been looking into music schools lately for her. This gives me hope. My goal is for my daughter to grow up feeling included and happy. Having friends, learning different things.

It's great that you care so much for her interests. I always say quality over quantity when it comes to friends. It's great to feel included in things and not feeling neglected just because you have a disability when really their other senses are way more heightened than those of us who can't see. Especially during the pandemic you can feel so isolated and become disheartened, disability or not. This would be a good way to help your daughter find joy. =\]

Schools for the blind throughout the country are increasingly moving toward only enrolling students with additional disabilities or for whom adequate education in a mainstream setting will pose significant problems to the student's educational success, so your daughter would be unlikely to be offered a place. I would also discourage you from pursuing this because she may lose many of the friends she currently has.

If you think that your daughter's TVI is not teaching her braille well, I would encourage you to organize an IEP meeting. If you feel that this will not be effective, you can request advice—including support at the meeting—from the National Federation of the Blind. They have many other resources you may find helpful, and they would applaud your expectation of your daughter's reaching the same benchmarks as other students.

Thank you. At our next IEP meeting I’ll do that. She currently is just getting 30 minutes a day of Braille, everything else she has an assistant reading it to her.

That's not ideal.

Your daughter should be receiving instruction in all of these areas from someone who does not necessarily need to be the TVI: https://www.tsbvi.edu/math/3973-ecc-flyer If she's not receiving instruction in any of them, I encourage you to make a fuss about it.
