I come from a family where most people are legally blind or are on their way there and they have a hard time accepting it.
Here are the cases: my grandparents ( blind for as long as I can remember) want to start using technology to make it easier, by that I mean voiceover for iPhone, and machines to help them around the house. My father ( gone no contact with grandparents ) is already there, but he wants to be more independent.
My mother is slowly losing sight, even though she is legally blind she can still see using thick glasses, but in the next 5 years or so she won’t be able to see either.
My questions are:
- are there any tricks for the voiceover? I know of some, but those are only the basics and not that helpful. How can I teach them?
- do you use a certain brand of hoovers or automated products that are easily programmable and accessible?
- are there any “talking” watches or medical products like scales, thermometers, glucose or blood pressure meters?
- tricks for learning/ teaching someone to navigate with a white cane? Any tips on how to choose one?
- how can I make my mother more comfortable with loosing sight? We are not on good terms by any means, we barely talk even though we live in the same house, but I want to help her with what I can before I leave home.
