Opportunity to participate in accessibility research on social virtual reality with UW-Madison (self.Blind)
submitted by mvsovo
Hi, we are members of the Human Computer Interaction (HCI) research team in the Department of Computer Sciences, University of Wisconsin Madison. We are collaborating with the research teams at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and the City University of Hong Kong to study how people with disabilities use and perceive their avatars on social VR platforms. We are looking for participants with disabilities to understand their avatar experiences.

In this study, you will be interviewed over a zoom call about your experiences with social VR platforms and virtual avatars. We may also ask you to share your screen via Zoom to demonstrate your avatar on social VR platforms. The interview will last approximately one hour.

To participate in the study, participants must:

1. be at least 18 years old
2. have visual impairments or motor disabilities
3. have experience using social VR platforms and avatars
4. not have mental/cognitive disabilities

You will receive a $15/hour compensation for your participation.

If you want to participate in this study, please follow this link to complete the survey:

If you know of anyone who would be interested, please feel free send them this post.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Weijun Li at $1 or Wenxin Wang at $1

Please elaborate on what you mean by a social VR platform.
mvsovo [OP] 2 points 1y ago
social VR platform enables users to work together from separate remote locations using virtual reality. Participants appear as avatars in environments that can be lifelike or fantasy worlds. (e.g., Rec Room, VR chat, AltspaceVR...)

Well, I'm visually impaired and play Rec Room with my friends. I use an Oculous quest.

Is this a paid gig?

Wow, you are a perfect candidate for our research. Feel free to fill out the questionaire at https://uwmadison.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0d251W3jiRjhRtQ and we will contact you. The compensation is $15/hr.

I tried, but your form only accepts US phone numbers, so, it wouldn't let me submit. I'm UK based.

Are those platforms even accessible to begin with?

>Are those platforms even accessible to begin with?

The accessibility of these social VR platforms is not very good, but some people with disabilities use them. And that is the reason for our research, hoping to improve the accessibility of social VR platforms

I'd love to participate, but being totally blind, I'm completely locked out of VR.
