If I'm unsure i use phone to check what color it is but it's not error free only spectometer or colorimeter would be.

But if i know if color is in cold spectrum (blue, green, silver, gray, black...) i put the clothes on the right side of the closet, if it's more on warm spectrum (red, yellow, orange, gold) i put it on the left side.
How to match them? There are many guides about how to bulid color schemes for... graphic design, room design etc. There are apps that will automatically bulid color scheme matching chosen photographed color it might be helpful. Color wheel theory, how to match basic ones is essential to learn later on subtile shades.
As long you're holding to basics of color wheel theory (there are few easy rules) it's ok i think.

In fashion are crazy mixes and matches allowed depending on what's trending right now. Once it was all light light pastel colors other time it was high neon strong colors completely not matching but it was "trending". Following fashion news helps a bit to know what colors to combine. .
But they have to match you i think that's most important. Often trendy colors dosent match me at all i look so ugly in them so i really need friends or family assistance in clothes shopping because i can't see myself well at all in mirror.

That's a smart way to organise it, and oh I hate clothes shopping, it's such a nightmare lol

Do you have an iPhone? I use Seeing AI and the color identifier to match my clothes. A general knowledge of what colors go well together helps as well: black and grey with just about anything.

Not the OP, but a quick question because you mentioned it: where do you find the colour descriptions in Seeing AI. I can’t see an option anywhere, but several people have mentioned this is a thing Seeing AI can do. I’m always on the lookout for a good colour description app, because all the ones I’ve tried have trouble with very light and very dark colours.

you could use Be My Eyes to get someone to help you sort your closet by color maybe?
