Jaws vs. Voiceover for word processing? (self.Blind)
submitted by yoyo2718
I’m sure this is largely personal preference, but I’m relatively new to screen readers so I’m looking for advice. I had a couple hour crash course intro to both Jaws and Voiceover since I have both a PC laptop and a Mac laptop, but Im fairly incompetent with both so I need to decide where to focus my efforts in the near term. I do know how to use voiceover on my phone, but I’m not super skilled yet.
My near term goal is I want to write fiction in Word (and want to get going with it as soon as possible since it’s a good outlet for me) and I’m not sure if one screenreader or the other will be easier? Im sure both would work, but is one significantly easier? I know there’s a learning curve no matter what, but I want to be writing, like, yesterday lol. Any thoughts?

I use voiceover and nvda. For using word nvda is far superior.

To test this open a document with tables and images. Far easier to work with under nvda.

I suspect things will be much of a muchness when it comes to Word. I use NVDA myself due to its (in my experience) better performance and its ability to switch between languages. Also its free. If you've already got Jaws of course that isn't really an issue.

I'm not sure how different the features are between voiceover and Jaws, but between Jaws and NVDA they aren't so great (in my experience) that switching between them is arduous. So if you focus on using one for a while, then decide to switch to the other you're unlikely to need to relearn much.

JAWS has mature support for comments, quicknavigation keys and an inconsistency checker. I use most of that for writing complex documents.

NVDA. The review cursor on the numpad is mighty handy when working in a document.

Thanks everyone! I’ve settled on jaws for the moment, might give nvda a look too, though I’m intimidated since I haven’t used it at all. I totally suck at editing lol, someone please tell me it gets easier!

Thanks for all the replies, really appreciate it.
