Hi, I take care of my grandma who is blind and I wanted some advice (self.Blind)
submitted by Kurome_H
So im not sure if this is the right place to ask but ill ask anyway. So i take care of my grandma who is fully blind and is unable to walk, i help her eat, move her around, reposition her when needed, etc. But im starting to find difficulty keeping her awake during the day, which is a bit of a problem at nighttime. Does anyone here have any ideas regarding maybe activities i could do with her or something to help her stay awake during the day?

I remember seeing ads for this about 10 years ago when I was 8-10 years old, maybe there's some support or advice there

You're welcome. Not fully sure why that ad stuck with me so much.

Could this be non-24?
Kurome_H [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Sorry? Im not sure what that is.

A chronic circadian rhythm disorder common for people who are totally blind. Causes problems sleeping at night, and an urge to sleep during the day.
Check out Hadley Presents-i know they did an episode on non24. Experts presenting on a wide range of topics related to vision loss.

It's got to follow Pavlov in some sense and please don't feel insulted by that suggestion. There have to be some auditory signs which indicate morning, afternoon, evening etc and she will get used to it.

It's wonderful that you are taking care of your elderly family. Most people don't do that and it's impressive that you are doing the same. Keep doing what you're doing

No worries, i understand the meaning for it, and it seems like something that can work so i appreciate the suggestion. Ill take any advice i can get if im honest.

My dad is the same way, he’s been totally blind since he was about 20… I actually looked at that same ad but my dad doesn’t seem to mind sleeping till noon and then reading late at night so I couldn’t get him to try it - I hope it works for your grandma!!
