Not diagnosed with glaucoma anymore? (self.Blind)
submitted by mthklf
Hello! Long story short since I was about 17 years old I was diagnosed with glaucoma , and before then I was a glaucoma suspect. I’ve been getting diagnosed with glaucoma up until this year. My pressures have always been in the 30s but the lantana Prost seems to be working so now they’re in the 20s but because of this the new doctor I saw doesn’t think I have glaucoma. The concerning thing though is I lost peripheral vision, so even though my optic nerve is seemingly healthy I don’t understand how I’m still losing vision? I also have Laddis Degeneration but got a laser to help. They keep telling me I have ocular hypertension but I just feel like I’ve been getting told I have glaucoma my whole life why all the sudden has it changed? I work with Department of Blind services because the vision I lost in the light sensitivity has heavily impacted my life. Do they really dismiss it because of my age? I’m so confused

Is the peripheral field loss happened after treatment with laser for retina lattuce degeneration? It's completely normal and expected effect of losing peripheral vision after laser to stop degeneration, seal/destroy bad retina areas. Destroyed areas won't be working won't be sending any visual signals to the brain they're burned out.

The definition of glaucoma is IOP of higher than 25 mmHg and optic nerve damage. Some experienced doctors can see it trough eye exam to see characteristic changes (but it's extremely hard that can be mistaken for myopic nerve changes that looks extremely similar) and interpret many visual fields done trough months to spot change. That's why if glaucoma is suspected numerous specialized tests with high tech machines are needed often at hospital ambulatory: OCT, GDx, few days stay to measure pressure and do pressure profile often every 2 hours even at night when lying in bed - those with glaucoma specialist analysis will most probably tell if you have glaucoma... whole glaucoma screening. Just high eye pressure isn't enough: optic nerve damage is needed. It might have happened wrong diagnosis has been made yet if you have been only treated with eye drops and had no significant side effects it only protected you from developing glaucoma. The lower IOP the lower the risk just for ocular hypertension target IOP isn't that high and from what I heard they don't do surgeries like those involving cutting trabs or MIGS, GDI because of benefits outweighing the risks overall. It's mostly eye drops (mono or polytherapy or tablets)

It's not uncommon to have ocular hypertension and sometimes Drs want to stay on safe side still prescribing eye drops to reduce IOP to reduce risk of developing glaucoma. They haven't noticed optic nerve damage despite high IOP that's why diagnosis is changed.
Even small kids are having glaucoma and people under 18, yes statistics tell "mostly" people have higher risk in older age elderly but eye doctors know statistics aren't 100% true and not even 1% of population is included in those or in clinical trials. They mostly treat patient individually not based on statistics or probability ("have in mind statistics as a guide but don't treat statistics treat the patient" saying from medical statistics lecture i had in school) Who the hell would remember statistics for every condition and sort everyone if you need remember mountain of other much more important stuff?

Light sensitivity is from laser treatment and lattice degeneration your retina isn't healthy. Secondary cataract is common after any laser treatment check on that even after months after blending and light sensitivity are first signs of that.

I myself had 70% of retinas destroyed trough laser treatment to save central vision to stop progression of neovascular glaucoma and Retinopathy of prematurity. ROP clogged abnormal retina veins trabecular meshwork Natural pathway of aqueous fluid so i had pressure of 50-70 mmHg yet it was still not angle closure.
