How do i know if bread is spoiled i am a low vision person and started living alone recently and cant tell if the bread is spoiled or good to use, was wondering is anyone knows how i could figure out if it is fine. i got it 5 days ago and forgot about it and would hate to throw out the whole thing

Maybe try the Be My Eyes or Aira apps to borrow somebody’s eyes so they can inspect the bread through your phone camera for you. Aira is free for 5 minutes every 48 hours if you choose to use that option rather than the volunteer Be My Eyes, but both should be able to help if you want to make sure there is no visible mould.

Have you looked into services and devices for people with low vision?
phasemorgsmom [OP]5 points1y ago
No not really the only think i know about is jaws

This is the best answer. My wife is extra paranoid about this. On the bright side, she has eaten bread with mold and never noticed. Be my eyes would be very useful

Smell it. I find that off bread smells "green" and weird. Sort of a fusty and damp smell...it's hard to describe but very distinctive.
To reduce the chances of it going off, when you buy a loaf, freeze most of it, keeping out enough for a couple of days. Once you use up the small portion, remove the next lot and allow it to defrost. Bread rarely suffers from being frozen.

>Smell it.
There's a danger of inhaling spores and a person with low vision might have to hold the bread very close. I wouldn't do it, or I'd ask a doctor first.
The suggestion to freeze fresh bread is a good one.

Good point. I find I can smell it very clearly as soon as I open the bag. I didn't realise it might not be so easy to detect.

I actually smells fine like normal bread...i had kept it wraped in plastic and its been about 6 days now...and yes thats what i do too but this was the end of the loaf so i thought id finish it hut forgot lol...thanks for replying appretiate it.

This is what I've always done. Freezing bread doesn't make it taste weird and defrosting a few pieces takes barely any time. Even if I were sighted I would do this just to ensure the bread stays fresh longer (unless you happen to be in a family that eats a lot of bread quickly). Before I was married I would even freeze milk, cheese and other things just to help me go for longer stretches without getting groceries.

Stale bread is stiff, bread with mold is usually damp and the texture may feel different than the rest of the slice. If you can get someone with normal vision to look at it or use one of the services recommended that would be a good idea.
Normally, bread bought five days ago should be fine (I'm not saying you should eat yours.). Are you buying loaves with the latest sell-by date? (With milk, the freshest milk is put at the back of the shelf, which may also be true of bread.) Are you refrigerating it? Are taking care to seal it securely so as little air gets in as possible?

This is the same reason I have so many reusable water bottles. Because I put something like juice in them then drink it but you know there’s still residue left in it but I forget about it and just leave the bottle on my floor or desk. Mostly because I’m lazy in the moment and don’t feel like cleaning it then I don’t remember for weeks.
But then like I clean them and leave them to soak but idk if it’s still dirty and it’s not like a regular dish where I can really scrub the entire thing good. So idk if there’s something nasty in there and one time I filled one up with water afterwards and took a sip and it tasted off.
So yea I have like 15 bottles and only use a few of them still. Which is super wasteful but I can’t drink nasty water.

I like the Stanley Adventure Quencher water bottle because you can put the entire thing, straw, cup, and lid, in the dishwasher. The mouth is wide at the top so it’s easy to clean. The only negative is that it does spill a little if you knock it over.

Bro, even a sighted person knows when bread is spoiled when they're not looking at it.
Trust me, bad bread smells horrific. You'll know.
Also, like another commenter said, just stick it in the freezer when you're not using it. I started doing this during college, not because of bad eyesight, but because of paranoia that it'll go bad and I'll have to go back to the store and... buy more.
ArcanaNoir6 points1y ago
I don’t really agree with that. I’ve bitten into bread plenty of times before realizing it had some green spots.
Dietzgen175 points1y ago
It's not uncommon for sighted people to freeze bread so it won't spoil, particularly if it's from a nice bakery or if it was bought in bulk. I'm sighted and only realized recently that freezing bread was a thing. It does work well.
phasemorgsmom [OP]2 points1y ago
Yeah i know that but this thing smell completely nornal thats why im a lil confused as to what to do cus i got it 6 or 7 daye ago. And id do the freezer method too but my fridge broke some days ago and i had to go somewhere for like 4 days got home some time ago

a loaf of bread won't go bad that fast, unless you're leaving it in an extremely moist and damp place. just sitting in your kitchen is fine.
