*RANT* My family is giving me a hard time about not being ready to sell my Harley. I told them I'll sell the car. Am I wrong? (self.Blind)
submitted by zzaacckk8
Hey family wants me to sell my car and Harley I am just not ready to do that I know I will never drive them again but it's just the fact that I don't want to. I will eventually but they are saying it is a seller's market and I guess that is true but I just need time as they are telling me I am just being a stubborn and maybe I am but it's my stuff. Best stuff only happened not even a year ago and I don't think they have the right to be mad at me for not doing it. Am I being irrational? How can I let them know that I will eventually but I'm just not ready. I have told them that but they didn't do not seen to be understanding my rationale. How can I help them understand???

Just because you can't ride the bike doesn't mean you can't tinker with it...

Wow! I love this I never really thought about that.

Financially, they are 100% right. It is an insane sellers market. You won't get these kinds of returns forever.

Emotionally? You Gotta do what you think is right... But, my non-therapist self tends to think a real therapist might want to address the material attachment especially since the items are causing you strife.

I get it. The bike probably feels like a piece of you, (before vision loss I assume?) a part of your life that you’re not ready to give up yet. Dealing with vision loss can be a long difficult process and everyone is different and needs their own time to accept it. Just stand your ground, tell them that you won’t attempt to ride it, (if that’s also the case) and that you’ll sell when ready. I think that’s perfectly reasonable.

The bike is being stored my dad's garage the car is covered outside. The bike is taking up half a bay in the garage but it is not really being utilized by anything. Like I said I am going to have to come to terms with the bike eventually but I am just now ready. The car okay cars are going for a premium rate right now and the states. I just cannot get them to understand that I will eventually but not this summer.

I suspect they are more worried about your safety in not driving either vehicles. Since you won't be using them anymore they see them as just taking up space. Sell them and make the money is like crossing a line of reality. When you're ready to accept not driving, you will sell them.

I personally still have and ride my bicycle.

Oh I would never consider driving them I will wind up in the hospital.

You are grieving the loss of one of your senses, that is hard and takes time to learn to cope with you are not wrong for not being ready to let go of things that you like. Do it at your own pace.

Thank you that makes a lot of sense but for some reason I am feeling very hopeful that that this new chapter in my life will be much better than my last.

That’s good! I’m glad you’ve got hope, if you can I would recommend getting into a blind and visually impaired training school to learn nonvisual techniques if you haven’t already, it really helps in loving foreword.

I'm linked w an organization called Visually Impaired Advancement and starting O&M this month. Is that the type of school you mean? There is a school for the blind about an hour away.

Yeah that’s the kind I meant, I recommend also taking Activities of Daily Living, Computers and Technology, and Braille if it’s available. Shop class is super fun too if you have that.

I feel like I’m going to get attacked by all of Reddit by saying this, but I feel like you don’t honestly need to sell it. If it means something to you, then hold onto it. I collect books and I can’t even read print. What’s the difference? I don’t see why having something like that is an issue. Just because you’re blind doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to keep a bike.

Wow haha I'm going to let them know about your collection. And yes someone else had recommended keeping them bike and working on it. I like that idea cuz I may have kids someday and I could give it to them.

That sounds great! Sounds like a nice hobby
