Looking for an old NVDA sound pack add-on, or a free liber sound pack with screen-reader sounds (self.Blind)
submitted by Fridux
Back in 2017 I remember using an add-on for NVDA that added extra audio cues to the screen-reader, such as a keyboard sound when a text field was selected, however I cannot for the life of me find that add-on anymore. I don't need the add-on itself, since I'm on MacOS and thus don't use NVDA, but I'd like to use some or all of its sounds on a $1 that I'm developing for World of Warcraft, provided that the sounds have a permissive enough license. Alternatively, if someone could point me to an audio pack with a permissive license suitable to be used by a screen-reader I'd be grateful. I've searched several free sound libraries and haven't managed to find anything useful yet.

PS: I chose the Advice Technology flair because I couldn't find anything that felt appropriate for this post. If the post itself is not appropriate for /r/blind, please delete it.

Hi there,

I think the add-on you're thinking of is Unspoken. You can get it from here: https://github.com/bingen13/unspokenPy3

the NVDA add-on is a zip file so you can unzip it and get the sounds from it.

HTH.

Thanks a lot! I've listened to the sounds and this is exactly what I'm looking for!

I am sorry, I cannot help you with tracking the sound you were looking for but I wanted to let you know that I am very very excited to see your progress on this ad on and would love to give it a try whenever it is ready to use. I’ve been dying to try to get back into playing World of Warcraft, and I got super pumped when I saw your first post about this!

Thanks! It's already usable to some extent, but there's still a long way to go before it supports everything I want it to. At the moment I'm making it modular and elegant to ease the process of adding specific support for special kinds of panes and widgets without hammering everything down in a single source file. In addition I intend to add some game world features like directional audio for quest tracking, mark and recall, and party member positions, as well as audio cues for when most of your abilities get in and out of range of a target, when you start and stop following someone, when conditions such as flying, mounted, swimming, diving, outdoors, combat, etc. change, when you bump into things, your orientation in the world, when your toon can see targets, when the mouse is hovering over certain things that can only be clicked on like chests, doors, and portals, and so on.. I'm also going to petition Blizzard to make all the tracking information shown on the Minimap available to add-ons so that I can assist with things like gathering, target location, and for providing awareness of your surroundings to classes with special tracking abilities like Hunters, assuming I cannot deduce that information already from the location of the blips on the Minimap.

that's awesome. the last I had heard, it seemed like it was only able to read off active panes like your inventory and the menu, chat pane, etc. Since it's been literally years since I've fired up WoW (and I don't even have it installed), I might have told myself that I would wait on a few more features but your current progress makes me want to go grab a copy and give it a whirl. best of luck to you and I hope that in the future you are able to incorporate those features. again, very excited to see how this pans out for you
