Delete if not allowed: I'm willing to volunteer my time to help you find the accessibility item you need but just can't find! (self.Blind)
submitted by Bsmith0799
I've already helped a couple people who had posted, needing a couple items. So I'm wondering if this would be a good thing to "volunteer" to do.

I know a lot of people won't need this but it does seem to be something that SOME people do need, and so this post is aimed at THEM.

I'll say this up front. I'm not a professional. I hold no degrees. But I have time on my hands. And surely searching for products online is simple enough to not require a qualification.

Let's say you're wanting to maintain your independence and you just really need help locating a long, cheap retractable rope so you can hook it to you to help with wayfinding so you can continue taking the trash out to the dumpster on your own so you can find the right gate back to your home. I'll help you find a rope that meets those requirements.

My only requests are:

1. You have a specific task or problem to solve and know a general item that could solve it.

2. You can explain the item to me so I can search for it.

And I'll send you a link to the item to solve the solution!

I'm willing to work around requests to avoid Amazon or big sellers, but I'd prefer not to, because it drastically limits where I can search. I usually search Amazon because they ship a lot of places. If you tell me you don't want to use them, it requires me to know where you live so I know to check if the smaller company will ship there. It takes away the anonymous factor on your end.

I don't need this but think it's really nice.

And before people say it; i'm sure the OP knows we can use our screen readers to get around they're just offering this survice.

You could even describe images for amazon products.

I'm sorry I don't need this because if i ddid it'd be really useful.

Yes, screen readers can be used, but that doesn't help when you keep searching but can't get an item to pop up. Thats what happened in my retractable rope example.

Is this offer still up? I’m having a very hard time finding O&M services in my town but surely they must exist?

Sometimes, it doesn't come from your town itself but from a larger city and they travel to you.

When I lived in Red Oak Iowa the Iowa Dept of the Blind (based in Des Moines) would come out my way and teach BVI people in my area for part of the month at their homes/in the community.

Look up your *state* Dept of the Blind. Call them and ask what services are available in your area.
