A few friends of mine are coding a virtual assistant to interact with online shopping interfaces and need to evaluate adequacy. (self.Blind)
submitted by magfafo
As stated above, a few friends of mine are coding a virtual assistant to interact with online shopping interfaces, through audios in messaging apps.

They need to evaluate adequacy, by which I mean approval amongst the targeted audience. That targeted audience being blind and visually impaired people.

For that goal they have created the following survey:

$1

It's supposed to be a quick survey, and it'd be of great help if some people filled it.

I hope it is not offensive to post this here. I by no means mean to bother anyone, and I am just trying to help them. We all mean well and to learn from the experiences of blind and visually impaired people.

I filled out the survey, this project isn't my kind of thing but if you make a prototype; I'll try it and give you feedback.

Just because I think I might not use it now doesn't mean I won't decide to in the future.

Two things:

1) It's not offensive to post it, but we really would have appreciated a heads up beforehand so that we could verify because we get a _ton_ of surveys.

2) From the sidebar, we have a whole README $1 that would likely be beneficial for the project.

I'm not removing your post, but you probably won't get many responses. Either way, I wish you the best of luck.

"Irrelevant information such as names of image files?"

That's not how that works. Not even close. I don't know anything about your work in AI, but I can tell you have no idea what you're doing, in accessibility.

Or... English might not be their first language.

The survey might mean irrelevant information such as the file path and things like that.

Not everyone speaks English as a first language, remember that.

They mean alt-text. They didn't research enough to realize that's different from the file name.

How do you know?

Filenames and paths are trivial from a programming perspective and irrelevant to users to the point it's useless to mention them.

When going over an image with no alternative text, a screen reader will read the filename. Somebody who doesn't know how alternative text works is likely to assume it's a carefully constructed filename, instead of a dedicated attribute.

I could be wrong, but I'm very confident in that analysis.
